Even here in rainy Portland we love a wash of tropical colors. It has actually been in the 90’s for the last few weeks and for our little city that is a heat wave! August is the perfect time to go a little tropical, no matter where on the globe you live. These lush hibiscus flowers are just the answer to add a splash of color to your beachy ensemble, to the top of a gift or to decorate your tropical themed event.

Here is the good news. . . they are quite easy to make with a little bit of crepe and tissue paper using my printable pattern and the tutorial below. To add even more interest you can simple blooms, spray the edges of your petals with a yellow paint to create an ombre effect. Just download the pattern, pick your bright pinks, oranges and green crepe papers gather your other materials and use the step-by-step tutorial below to make your bright blooms. Enjoy! ~ Lia

I would love to know which crepe paper colors you used for these. Having a hard time picking from all the colors available.

  Hi Sonja! This project is a few years old now so some of the colors have changed since then. Any of the colors from our Tropical Garden Heavy Crepe Paper collection would look beautiful!

  Hi Christina! No we don’t have any larger templates for these. You could try to draw the template by eye, following ours? Depending how large, you may want to add wire to the middle of the petal to give it more stability– similar to this flower: https://liagriffith.com/giant-paper-tulip-bulb/

Where is the pattern? Does it tell how to adhere the yellow tissue fringe to the wire? Thank you!

  The pattern is below the photos at the end of the post 🙂 To glue the fringe, add a dab of glue to the top corner of the open edge (not the folded edge that you fringe). Glue it to the wire, then wrap around in a downward spiral, with the folded fringe side facing out like seen in the photo.

For some reason, I wasn’t initially drawn to make this flower. HOWEVER!! I saw that you did them in white for your Aloha party invitation—OMG–they are totally gorgeous. I will definitely add them to my repertoire and give them a try tonight as soon as I get home. Can’t wait!

is there actually step by step instructions somewhere or is it just the pictures numbered 1 thru 10?
Is there a video or any generic tips you can give that will help making most of the flowers? I’m new to flower making.

  Unfortunately there is only the photo tutorial with this one. I will say that crepe paper is very forgiving, so there is not too much pressure to cut the pieces precisely to the template. Just make sure that you are cutting with the grain of the crepe! Best of luck!

I love these flowers but ive had trouble understanding a step,how do u attach the petals to the wire and bend the paper back without it ripping?

  You only glue the petal at the base, because crepe paper stretches easily you can bend it back without ripping (that is the beauty of crepe paper) Hope that makes sense:-)

Hi Lia,

I love your tutorials and patterns! I am new to making crepe flowers, but I am really enjoying all of your posts. One issue I’ve been running into on this one is attaching the center of the flower to the wire. In your picture the fringe seems to stick out from all sides of the wire, but I can’t tell how you are actually gluing the center in order to create this effect. Would you be able to provide me with additional instructions? Thank you!

  I glued one end to the tip then twisted it down the wire about 1.5 inches. The center is tissue paper so it flares out.

I’m wachting all kinds of paper garlands and paper flowers kits in my city in Haarlem. Last week we, my sis and i have found a kit to origami your own tulips. When we game home, and opened the kit it was a dessolution.LOLMy sis thought it was too difficult and i had to talk many hours to try to do this next week with some nomale paper to exercize.LOL
But i like paper foldings and garlands of all kind of materials.
but it makes me smile and it makes my day.
so this flower of yours as well.
it’s still amazing me how great and highly your skills are.
it’s looking very easy but i know by many years of crafting that it’s just a matter of trying and errors. But you’re helping with small advices and tips to become on a higher level.
i like that. At the moment i ‘m still painting wood and furniture to make my home more mine.
But when my sis comes i help her learning crocheting geranium plants and last time after buying some wood and shelfs we went shopping and watching the upper side of the houses in this town.
So we found this kit with tulips you could origamied.
and lots of idea’s for garlands;-D

I know that you have told us before, but I am going to ask again. Where do you get your crepe paper from? The stuff available at the local stores does not seem as thick or as substantial as yours.

By the way they are beautiful!!! Nice timing I am going to be having a belated graduation, nearly end of summer party this weekend and they would be perfect! (I realize the grad party is late, but with two sons graduating this is the first weekend that they will be here together!)
