DIY Gift Idea
When I was growing up, it was very rare that we had a store bought gift for Christmas. Though back in those early days it was due to tight budgets, I now love to give a handmade gifts or add a DIY personal touch to my gifts. Here is an idea for a gift where you can add your own simple twist. Paint the handles of wooden spoons or the bottoms of wooden salad bowls in your recipients favorite color. For my salad set I used the Martha Stewart vintage decor paint in a pale grey. I then used a clear finishing wax to seal the paint. Remember to keep the paint away from the areas of the spoons or bowl that would touch food. You can find these materials at Michaels and wood spoons and bowls at many of your stores that carry home goods. These were purchased at Crate and Barrel. Once this set was dry, I tied the “hand painted just for you” tag onto the spoons. You can download a set of these handcrafted tags at the end of this post. This is a fun way to share your homemade gifts.

Hope you have a lovely holiday season:)
We often created gifts during my childhood for the same budgetary reasons. Funny that now when I can buy any gift I want I still prefer to make gifts for those I care for the most. Some “get it”, some just think I’m quirky. 🙂
Oh and I do get you! You are a kindred spirit. 😉
It’s so true Lia,
a handmade Christmas present is just so wonderful to receive.
Although it’s always a stretch at this time of the year (we’re heading into summer Down Under and so bbq’s, parties, etc) to make something (or lots of things) to give as Christmas gifts . . . .
but it’s so worth it!
We can’t get the MS products you’ve used, but I’m going to see if I could find something similar.
Or do Michaels ship to Oz?

Use the Annie Sloan chalk paint. LOVE that brand! I am pretty sure she is in Australia.
DIY/handwriting or hand-making part of your gift does personalize your gift. I believe the recipient appreciates it much more this way. Good ideas for this upcoming Christmas.
It’s creative to paint the handle of the salad spoons. Cool collectibles at Michaels store…
THanks Carlos!
