Papel_Picado_Drink_FlagsOne celebration we absolutely love here in Portland is the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). Traditionally a celebration of victory after the Battle Of Puebla in the late 1800’s, today Cinco de Mayo is more about celebrating Mexican culture and traditions. Here in Portland the entire waterfront area is awash with color as the Cinco de Mayo fiesta takes over between the 2nd and 5th May. There’s a fun carnival, lively music, delicious food carts, traditional Mariachi performance and an artisan village selling traditional Mexican arts and crafts. For those of you having your own Mexican themed celebration this year, or those who would just love a little bright and beautiful paper cut banner for birthday celebrations, parties or family brunch, we have designed this intricate DIY papel picado for you. Using a variety of orange and pink papers in hot and cool colors we cut these flags using our cricut cutting machine then simply strung them onto garden twine. You will find the SVG cut file below. I have also included the PDF file for this project so that you can cut the flags by hand using an exacto knife. The teeny weeny flags were cut on our cutting machine then attached to skewers using a little glue. These make great drinks stirrers or can be attached to cocktail sticks to make cute cupcake toppers. For those of you with your eye on the beautiful jug of margarita cocktail – I’ll be sharing the recipe for that little gem on Friday so make sure you come back! Enjoy! ~ Lia
