Peppercorn and Yellow EntryWelcome (or should I say “wulcom”) to the first of my home tour series. I have received many emails and comments from you all asking when I am going to show you the interiors of the new home. I moved from my downtown loft (see tour here) into a craftsman style house just last April and am having a great time planning, painting and decorating each room. Truth. . . it is taking me longer than I thought to get this house to a place for a full tour. . . so many details to finish. So I decided to post one room at a time and will set a goal for one room per week. Good plan, right? Deadlines like this help my creative ideas flow double time. Today we will start with the entry room of the house. I will share all of the photos first then go into detail about all of my colors, pieces and accessories as the end of the post.

As you come in from the covered porch (I will tour that once I have it freshly painted), the large over-sized door opens to a small room with a door on each of the other three walls. That is a lot of doors for a little room. The left and right are gorgeous pocket doors one leading to the living room and the other to my office. Straight ahead, the door had been removed to walk into what is now my photo studio.

WALL PAINT: The first thing I did was paint the walls in Sherwin Williams Peppercorn. I love painting small rooms in a dark color. For me the dark rich color adds a feeling of importance to these little spaces.
FABRIC ART & CHALK BOARD: Knowing I wanted to keep the office doors closed at all times, I hung one of my large fabric pieces in the center of the two doors creating a white frame around this bold black and tan fabric art. This made the closed packet doors seem more like an architectural detail rather than a passageway. I then filled the empty doorway with a hollow core door that I purchased at Home Depot and yes. . . painted it with chalkboard paint. With my favorite Henry David Thoreau quotes I covered the chalkboard in handwriting from top to bottom. Reading these quotes makes me happy.
ENTRY TABLE: This chalkboard door gave me a perfect backdrop for an entryway table. I found this piece at a furniture consignment store after it had been marked down several times. The table had enough wear and tear that I knew I would paint it with Chalk Paint® decorative paints by Annie Sloan, in the Graphite color and finish it with the dark and clear wax to bring in a vintage look and show off the beautiful details. I will be sharing this transformation with you in an upcoming video tutorial.
ENTRY STOOL: This antique piano stool was found at the consignment shop right next to the entry table. It was well worn with a threadbare seat cover. Wanting to add a pop of color, I painted the wood in the Chalk Paint® decorative paints by Annie Sloan, making a custom color with English Yellow as the base. I made a simple seat slipcover that I can change out easily from this yellow and grey ikat home decor fabric.
CHANDELIER: A few months ago I shared a tutorial for this gorgeous flower garland. It has since been stored in the corner of my studio waiting for its next use. I knew I wanted to create a dramatic paper chandelier for the entryway and these yellow and cream blooms seemed to be just the ticket. I first covered the round ball light fixture with a vintage wire egg basket, then tied the strands of blooms from the wire creating a flower cascade from the high ceilings of the entryway.
BASKETS: When experimenting with a small jar of silver paint a few months ago, I lightly brushed these chunky wicker baskets to add some shimmer and ended up loving the look. For me they say rustic glam.
WALL LETTERS: I felt I needed something on the small wall and started my search for a series of images or objects that I could display vertically. When at the antique store I spotted a basket of old sign letters. After digging through trying to form a word I decided to make up my own spelling of a warm greeting. Why not? It encourages people stop and look. The letters had been painted bright blue with the M in a teal. I knew immediately they be painted bright yellow and used the Chalk Paint®, decorative paints by Annie Sloan, in English Yellow.
OBJECTS: I like oddities and curious things mixed into my interiors so the vintage ceramic glove form and weathered wire hat holder seemed to be perfect for an entry display. A stack of my old books topped with a large starfish filled the second shelf nicely. Of course no room is complete without some green so my zamioculcas (or z plant) placed into a vintage pot and a small container of succulents finished the welcoming look my grey on grey entry.

Next week we will tour the living room. You can see a sneak peek of it here in my summer fireplace styling post. Cheers! ~ Lia
