Magnolias are traditionally a very “American” flower. I originally designed this crepe paper magnolia bouquet as a centerpiece for my 4th of July celebration that was featured on The Today Show’s Kathie Lee and Hoda. After making the bouquet, I decided that I wanted to wait until the extra fine crepe paper line was ready for purchase to share the pattern. Well, that day has finally come and I could not be more excited! Visit our online craft store to shop our crepe paper!
Usually, I like to design flowers that capture the beauty of the bloom as it appears in nature. In order to do this, I try to make them look as realistic as possible. But sometimes you just have to have fun with it!
I wanted to add metallic accents to my crepe paper magnolia bouquet, so that is exactly what I did. For these flowers, you can make your own double-sided paper or use my double-sided crepe paper. You will also need 18-gauge floral wire, gold floral tape, and 20mm cotton spun balls. I also mixed in a few copper and gold leaves made from text weight metallic paper.

- Lia Griffith Double-Sided Crepe Paper – White & Vanilla
- Lia Griffith Extra Fine Crepe Paper – Metallic Collection
- Lia Griffith’s Favorite Frosted Gold Paper Pack
- 18-Gauge Green Paper Covered Wire
- 20mm Cotton Spun Paper Balls (24 pack)
- Floral Tape — Gold
If you are making your own double-sided paper, you will need:
- Lia Griffith Extra Fine Crepe Paper – Vanilla, Linen
- Fusible Bonding Web
Instructions
To make your crepe paper magnolia bouquet, start by downloading the PDF template below. This will be your guide for cutting your crepe pieces.
Magnolia petals are much larger than other flower petals, so I decided to use a fusing technique with stitch witchery to thicken up the crepe. To create some visual depth in my magnolias, I prefer double-sided crepe paper. To make your own, fuse the White crepe with the Vanilla. Cut a sheet of fusible bonding web the same size as your crepe sheets and stick it between the two pieces of crepe. Use an iron to melt the fabric glue. Once it is melted, the crepe is fused!
You can also use this technique to create your own double-sided crepe for other projects. Now you can cut your crepe petals according to the template and follow the step-by-step photo tutorial.

Hi Lia,
I just made this magnolia – they’re so beautiful but I need help with the metallic/frosted paper. How do i put a stem on it. I tried to glue it on an 18 Ga green wire but it’s too bulky and I tried the 24 ga and it can’t hold it well. What else can you suggest. Please help

I find that it works best to sandwich the frosted paper with the wire between. You can make a strip of frosted to cover the back of the leaf and wire. This is a newer technique and I teach it in the frosted paper master class.

Hi Lia, We have many magnolia trees where I live and they all have large, dark green, glossy leaves year-round. So I’m curious why you chose to use the brown/copper colored leaves.

Hi Lia, I have a bit of a silly question. I’m having trouble finding a store that sells 3/4″ foam balls. So far I haven’t found any that small. Can you share where you got them from?
I have found them at Michaels and JoAnn before, but Amazon is my go-to 🙂

I recently made some of these for my daughter – she was in a local theatre production of Steel Magnolias, and hosted the cast party. I ordered your products, and they turned out perfectly! I plan to make more for my Christmas tree (it is Louisiana’s state flower, after all). Thanks for a wonderful project! (Also, we plan to be in Oregon in early November, photographing the coast and beautiful scenery.)

Lia where is the template for the metallic paper leaves that you have with the magnolias?

Of all days not to check my email yesterday!! I was super excited to see your crepe paper line had launched when I checked it this morning though. I was able to place a small order, but most was unavailable. Do you know when it’ll be available again?

The colours are so beautiful. Wish to get the brown tones in Germany. No trouble to get soft pastels for the blooms here but I miss this beautiful range of brown colours (and autumn greens). You really should ship to Europe 🙂

Congrats on getting your new line of crepe out!! I’ve ordered one of everything, of course. I can’t wait to try all the colors of the doublette. I’ve been holding back on using my current stock–kind of hoarding it. I don’t know why??? Also, great idea for the fusing for doublette. I never would have thought of that! I’ve been using a spray glue to make mine, but it’s so unforgiving. Gotta run to Joanne’s and get some fusible web. Since I haven’t been sewing lately, I’m out of stock–YIKES!!!

So glad your new venture is so successful!
I made one of the magnolia flowers last night–probably not quite as big–I used some white/white doublette that I have on hand and cut 2 petals vertically. Since the doublette is 10 inches wide, it looks like it’s a little smaller than yours. And I cut out 8 petals/flower and it’s absolutely beautiful!!! I am fighting the temptation to add a calyx to the flower–seems that some do and some don’t. I’m off to Michigan next week for vacation to our friends’ lake house and I wanted to take a bouquet for our hostess (haha–when I look at the bouquet I took last year, I’ve come a long way!!). This was easy to put together, so I think I’ll cut the petals and make the leaves before I go and assemble the flowers there. That way they will arrive safe and sound–she’s gonna love it! So, once again, Lia, thanks for another GREAT idea. I would encourage anyone to try this flower. It’s a great one for beginners to try and they are absolutely stunning!!!!
