As we continue dreaming up our winter home decor scheme, we are adding in faux fur accents for a cozy warmth to get us through the colder months. First we made some faux fur pillows perfect for curling up with a nice book, and now we are sharing the tutorial to make a matching fur throw blanket. This throw blanket is easier to sew than the pillows because there are no zippers involved. Before starting this project, be sure to read our tips and tricks for sewing with faux fur!

For this fur throw blanket, we used a Shannon Fabrics Luxury Shag fur in white for the front side and a soft and cuddly flannel for the back side. We found Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel Plaid at our local fabric store, and combined with the fur it has a rustic mountain glam style fit for the Alps. Our blanket measures 44 inches x 60 inches, so you will want to buy around 65 inches of the flannel. Of course, you can make any size of blanket that you want. Before you start sewing the blanket, you will definitely want to pre-wash the flannel because it will shrink. After it comes out of the wash, lay it on top of your faux fur fabric, pin the two together and cut the fur according to the size of the flannel.

We know it can seem intimidating, but sewing with fur is much easier than it looks! Use a regular needle and thread with your sewing machine and sew a straight stitch to attach the front and back sides of your fur throw blanket. As we mention in our tips and tricks with fur, you will want to sew a little bit longer stitches than usual. Follow the photo tutorial below to help you with the sewing process. If you ever want to wash the blanket in the future, we recommend either hand washing or dry cleaning – drying will mat the fur.

Once you’re finishing with your fur throw blanket, style it on your couch or give one as a gift! Browse all of our sewing projects for more inspiration, or take a look at our membership options to join our crafting community. Stay cozy! ~ Lia and the Team
