When designing home decor projects, we always like to create projects that can be trendy or timeless without being intimidating. We’ve seen fiddle leaf fig trees popping up in photos on some of our favorite blogs and Pinterest boards, and then we came across this article from a few months ago in the New York Times. After reading the article and seeing how temperamental the plant can be to care for, we knew we had to have our hand at making a paper version. Hello crepe paper fiddle leaf fig, our newest addition to our Potted Plant Series!
We made a potted version of the paper fiddle leaf fig to decorate an end table or mantle, but if you are feeling inspired we definitely encourage you to try making a larger version of the tree for your home decor! Fiddle leaf fig trees seem to be so popular because they are beautifully sculptural with whimsically exciting leaf arrangements – perfect for our collection of potted plants. And as always, it was a great opportunity to use some of our extra fine crepe paper. We made our potted paper fiddle leaf fig using the double sided greens in our paper collection. You will also need 18 gauge floral wire and floral tape. We actually used brown floral tape instead of green for this project to resemble a tree trunk.
The last important material that you will need for this project is a white blender marker. We love using Winsor & Newton brand. Use this marker to add the vein detailing and create some visual depth in the paper fiddle leaf fig. The end result is gorgeous! I’m having a bit of trouble assembling the leaves to the wire. It’s looking a little messy. Can you share how much the leaves should overlap?
Mine overlap about 1/8″ of an inch, just enough to hide the strip of hot glue 🙂
I bought a few different types of colorless blender markers (one was even the recommended brand) and it’s still not working. I’m using your crepe paper and everything. What am I doing wrong?
We just double checked and the post, and it linked to the incorrect marker. The you’ll want is the Windsor White Blender, not the colorless. You can also try a regular ol’ white colored pencil for a similar look! Sorry for the trouble!
I cannot access the download for the fig leaf plant although I have a membership that is active. When I try accessing the download it just brings me back to the original posting of the fig leaf plant. I tried several times with the same result. Please help.
Hi Estelle! Check your downloads folder and desktop to see if the PDF made it there– sometimes the site will refresh after a download. You should also try a different web browser as sometimes it’s just a glitch in the app (unfortunately it’s not something we can control!)
