Become a MemberA few weeks ago I was helping my friend create her hat decoration for the Kentucky Derby party we were going to be attending together. We made over-sized paper flowers in bright pinks and plums and added some huge paper feathers into the mix to finish the over-the-top look. They were so pretty I knew I had to create a post for you on making a smaller version of this simple paper feather design. You can use them for gift toppers, a wedding boutonniere, put a few in a shadow box to hang on your wall, or make a paper feather wreath for your summertime decor! Browse to find my paper feather wreath projects in teal and gold. These feathers are very simple and would make a fun craft project for kids. Simply print my template onto your choice of colored papers or printed papers (I am loving the vintage dictionary page), then follow the directions below to complete. I have a PDF template available for those who are hand cutting, and an SVG file for everyone with a cutting machine. Enjoy! ~ Lia

Thankfulness to my father who shared with me about this weblog, this website is genuinely remarkable.
Thank you so much!
These are so lovely! I wonder, how did you get the crease in the center of the feather?
I just fold it. To get the curve, fold carefully bit by bit or score it first.
Thank you, Lia! I was making it far more complicated in my head (potential step 1: get foam. step 2: get blunt item which is also sharp enough to crease, but not tear! step 3: etc. etc.) You just made life much easier. Thank you so much for this idea!
Good:-)
I love your paper feathers, such a simple idea and the motif isn’t so ‘cutesy’ like hearts, butterflies etc! I like symbols that I guess have a more ‘masculine’ tone…?!
feathers, leaves, stones, etc….I live in New Zealand and it is getting cold and wintry now, the time I start thinking about crafting – have gone mad browsing Pinterest!
Pinterest is addictive;-)
perfect
and
beautiful
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this beautiful template! I have wanted to make some of these for my daughter’s mobile in her nursery but they always end up very straight and lame looking. These are beautiful and artistic!!!
Enjoy!
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m making some chocolate to offer here in Paris, this will be perfect to decorate ma gift boxes. Have a nice year end of 2014!
I will definitely have to stop by when I am in Paris:)
Your feathers are beautiful!!!Thanks a lot for sharing!!!
You are so welcome!
do you have the svg file or is there a way to cut these on the Explore. I am new to the Explore, but love it, and would love to cut these on it.
Thanks so much, I would love to be in your brain for a day or 2!
You are a blessing to me.
Sorry I made these before I had my Cricut Explore so I didn’t make a svg file:( I need to… LOL I don’t know if you want to be in my brain, it is crazy in there:) Lots of ideas and not enough time;-)
These feathers are going to look so good on my handmade cards. Thanks for the template.
You are welcome! The feathers are one of my all-time favorites as gift toppers, in wreaths or on cards.
Thanks, i’ll try it on my jewel packaging
That is a great idea, please share a picture with us on FB https://www.facebook.com/liagriffith.hyl
Beautiful – thank you! Wold love to see a picture of your Derby hats ;oP
Here you go:) https://liagriffith.com/my-paper-kentucky-derby-hat/
I love this template, thank you so much. I have my whole house decorated in bird décor so this is a great way to make feathers of any color !!!!! The front wall of our atrium Chinese garden in the front of our house this covered in bird houses. One thing to remember if you live in a warm climate like SW Florida is to put scrap pieces of screen in the holes or you will have numerous mud dopper & hornets nest and you will get stung, I know my experience.
Your house sounds amazing! I would love an atrium Chinese garden. Thank you for sharing the tip for everyone living in a warm climate, sorry you had to learn the hard way. Have fun with the paper feathers, cannot wait to hear the result!
Sorry if this question has been asked already but about how many feathers do you need to cover the styrofoam wreath?
Check out this post: https://liagriffith.com/making-a-wreath-from-paper-feathers/
36 feathers on a 12 inch form.
These are so cool! I want to make a bunch of these! great package toppers!!!
I love these on gifts for both women and men. There are some new images of toppers in my post about masculine gift wrap that look very nice too.
Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
thank you so much for sharing
Happy to share!
I used your template for a photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/a1pha_gr/14245223626/
Thank you for your post and template! 🙂
How fun is that! Thanks for sharing!
Or these would be much easier and still hold the same theme!!!
True. Or use both. The birds for the centerpieces or main tables and the feathers on each plate?
We are new to the blogging world and used your paper feather template on one of our first DIY projects! Thanks for the inspiration!

Such a cool idea. Thanks so much for the template and tutorial.
You bet! I love sharing.
I’ve done some flowers you showed and they got so gorgeous! Next time I’ll try these feathers 🙂 love your blog
Thanks Frenanda! These feathers are so fun to make too!
I love you feathers. I need to make hundreds of these in different sizes for my sisters wedding. What do you recommend to be the easiest way to do this without hurting my hand cutting them all with scissors? I can’t seem to find a hole punch anywhere
I recommend getting the new Cricut Explore! It will be available next month. If you need them sooner, borrow the Silhouette Cameo and use the Silhouette template that I offered out on the glittered feather post in December. Let me know if you need any other assistance. I want you to have fun with this project. 🙂
Lia, I loved these feathers so much that I used your template for a gift tag on my Hot Wing Salad Dressing food gift 🙂 http://homemadeforfriends.com/2014/01/22/hot-wing-salad-dressing/
All the best!
Melissa
I saw that this morning. LOVE it!
I am going to make about 100-150 feathers. My son is about to get his Eagle Scout award and I came up with an idea several years ago from a Snapple cap lol…it said an eagle had 7000 feathers. I kept that cap in my purse for 4 yrs and decided for his Eagle Court of Honor I am drawing an eagle head and each attendee will be given a feather to write a memory or inspiration for the new eagle scout and they will then pin it on the eagle drawing so we can “feather the eagle”. thanks for the help on our project
I LOVE this story Susan. Thanks for sharing it with me. If you are using a Silhouette, I can send you the template with the large feather so they all match.
What kind of craft scissors do you recommend? Those feathers are so cute. My scissors aren’t very agile, though….or maybe it’s just me!
I think a pair that fits in your hand nicely is the best. Try some on and see what is comfy. Most scissors are plenty sharp so it is more about how well they function with your hands. I really like the Scotch Precision scissors for paper cutting. Again, they feel good in my hand. 🙂
I love the feather template. I volunteer at a nursing home teaching arts and crafts and I know the ladies will love them! Thank you for a wonderful project. It will be put to good use.
That is so sweet. There are so many fun things you can have them use them on too. 🙂
Love these paper feathers! I’ll be using some printed on music for my Christmas decorations. ^.^Thanks for sharing!!!
Love these with music pages!
I used some music sheet scrapbook paper and they look great! Perfect addition to my “reJOYce” themed mantle and they look great on my brown paper wrapped packages too. Thanks again for such a handy free pattern.
Such a great idea! Love sheet music for these feathers.
I LOVE the variety of shapes, and they do make lovely tie-ons. Thank you so much for the template.
You are welcome. Make sure you check out the feathers as a garland with glitter tips. So pretty. So many things you can do.

Lia,
I subscribed to your blog a few weeks ago though I have viewed it many times before. I just want to let you know that when I see you in my inbox, I’m always happy because I know something good and positive and fun awaits. I am a seamstress and crafter who enjoys simple joys, reading, friends and family. I live in my faith and try to bring joy and peace into anyone’s life I encounter. Thank you for also spreading joy and positive, simple things that make a difference even if by just making all your followers smile and breath in a little of your wonderful creativity and generosity of spirit. God Bless you and your family.
Thanks Pat! What a wonderful note to start my week. Just what I needed to hear today. . . that I am spreading joy. Hugs to you. 🙂
Hi Lia! I’m writing a post on a blog about pretty packaging, and I’d very much like to include a picture of these feathers and a link back to this blog post. May I get your permission to do so? (I’m new to blogging and not sure the proper way to go about this.) Thank you!
Absolutely! I look forward to seeing your new blog. Let me know your URL.
This is such a fabulous look. The wreath would make a lovely gift. I think if you made the wreath in different shades and prints of blue or pink it would be a great centerpiece for a shower and later the mother to be could put it on her door celebrating the arrival of the new baby. Colors could also be done different according to seasons as well. Great Job!
Yes indeed, any color would look gorgeous. I made a white and gold metallic one for an upcoming Christmas post that is now hanging on the wall in my office tour photos.
These are fabulous. Will give ’em a go at school with the kids I teach. There are soooooo many applications for these little beauties. Wish I had thought of them!
Yes, I have just made yet another batch of feathers that I will be sharing soon. They have a bit of a Christmas vibe. 🙂
I absolutely love these paper feathers. Your color choice is fabulous. They have many applications. I’ll be thinking of ways to incorporate them into a display in my boutique flower shop.
Share photos when you do! I would love to see your display. 🙂
This is why I love PINTEREST, I found you and your gorgeous site. I will definitely be trying this, I absolutely love wrapping a gift in a stylish manner, and this is SO stylish, thank you. Best wishes, Carina
Thanks Carina and THANKS pinterest!! 😉
Thank you for sharing this. Can’t wait to give it a try. Your packages and feathers are so lovely.
Thanks Denise! There are so many places you can use these feathers. 🙂
forgot to add a photo: http://pinterest.com/pin/178032991492494983/
Love it!!
Thank you SO much for this. I found you via pinterest on Wednesday. By Wednesday night, I had cut out a white feather and made it into a birthday card. Thursday after work I began cutting out more feathers (rainbow colors). Friday I went to the craft store with a plan, bought some card stock, and home again, started cutting out feathers. Saturday I continued, working literally 12 hours straight – and on Sunday I had a beautiful feather/dreamcatcher mobile to give to an expectant mama at her baby shower!
You are amazing! So happy you found them. 🙂
This a very nice idea and your feathers are gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks Katou!
Very pretty! I want to try them in felt to embellish the hats I make. A little wire down the center will make them easy to shape, and they could be lengthened for a sassy addition to a wide-brimmed chapeau! I can just see them curved over the top of a pillbox or around the wide band of an African Crown. The ideas are too numerous to list here, but thanks for the pattern and lovely pictures!
Great idea. Share photos of the finished feathers. 🙂
These are so beautiful!!!
We made a post with links to your amazing tutorial:

Thanks Suzanne, I added a link to your Saturday Sparks!
Thank you so much! These are wonderful and just too perfect, since I’m a vegan…no bird feathers in my craft projects, though I do find feathers pretty on the birds they belong to. 😉 I am so excited to see more of your projects now that I’ve found your website. A link at the Fiskateers message board led to this happy find. Thank you for generously sharing this download!
Thanks and big thanks to the Fiskateers. I had not even thought as this being a great vegan option, but you are right!
