DIY Embroidery Floss Tassels
Tassels! We’re seeing them everywhere. We’re seeing them in jewelry, on clothes, they’re hanging from our handbags, they adorn our booties, they swing from our keychains. We are a nation infatuated. So, it’s only natural that we teach you how to make tassels right?! The great thing about this tutorial is that, when you’ve got the basics down, you can go crazy with your tassel making. Make them in any material you choose from leather thong to embroidery floss, wool yarn to silk ribbon in practically any length or size you want – hooray! Make teeny ones for the tops of your pencils, or over-sized beauties to tie back your drapes. Make a stash to use as pretty gift-toppers or just the one for a special handmade necklace. However you choose to use them, now that you know how to make tassels, there will be no stopping you.
The only thing we love more than sharing our tutorials with you, is when you share your creativity with us. Inspired to make a little tassel jewelry? Planning to re-vamp a tired purse with a few fresh tassels? Share your makes with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DIYdreamingWithLia and we will share our faves. Looking forward to seeing what you have been up to! ~ Lia

Hi. Did you use cotton rayon or silk floss please
We usually use DMC which is cotton.
Pardon for the new question on an old post. I love these, and I really like the way you can’t see a knot where the thread was tied to make the tassel head (seems much less made-at-home). I’m making these for a throw pillow. In case the cover needs to be washed, will these fall off in the laundry process since there’s no knot?
Hi Crystal! I haven’t tried washing anything with the tassels attached so I can’t say for sure, but can’t imagine they’d hold up all that well. You might wand to hand wash or throw the covers in a mesh laundry bag, or even make the tassels detachable?
Thanks Lia! You are very talented. I’m sharing your web site information with pre-school teacher friends of mine in Europe . Not sure they all can subscribe but you have so many things they can explore.
What a great idea! Thanks Chris, I like to think of a class full of little ones exploring their creative side!
Oh! These are lovely! I am going to do these to finish off the ends of a knitted scarf I just made. The pattern calls for fringe – but I think a row of tassels will be much cuter and really accent the hand painted fibers better. Now, who has floss on sale? 🙂
You are such a crafter! Knitting is not my forte…but that sounds like it will look amazing!
How was the cord made to create the ring around the napkin? Thanks for such beautiful ideas. Bev
I just braided 3 pieces of embroidery floss, wrapped it around the napkin, and then tied it in the back 😉 Super easy! It adds a nice textural touch
Do I understand correctly that the two pieces you cut initially are six-ply floss and you keep them intact?
Darling! I’m going to try in a Valentine shade and embellish with a small heart charm!
Thank you for all your inspiration.
Exactly! Keep them intact. That sounds like a fabulous Valentine’s project, great idea!!
