How many different ways can we make hearts for Valentine’s Day? The answer is: a lot! This macrame heart is such a sweet valentines decoration — and you could even keep it up year-round.

This macrame heart would be so pretty in your home, or you can always gift it to someone for Valentine’s Day. If you’re using it as your own decoration, just loop it around a doorknob when you’re done. Or simply hang it up on your wall. It would also be really cute in a nursery, play room, or kid’s room!
Crafting tips: The knots you will need to know for this macrame heart are: button knot, larks head knot, wrapped knot, alternating pattern, and half hitch knot. We will show you how these knots look in our photo tutorial, but if you’re a beginner, make sure to watch our macrame video course first! Also, this project is easier to make on a flat surface compared to hanging it like we do for some of our other macrame projects.
How to Make a Macrame Heart
- Gather your craft tools and materials from the list above.
- Cut 14 pieces of macrame cord that are each 12 feet long and 3 pieces that are each 4 feet long.
- Fold the 12ft cords in half and tie each around the dowel using a larks head knot; separate the four cords on either end, leaving 20 cords in the middle.
- Take the first four cords in the center group and tie a button knot 16 inches below the dowel.

I like the embroidery floss idea, but am fairly new to macrame, how long of strings would I need
I do not know since we have not tried the embroidery floss version. Maybe try 3 feet long?

I’d love to make this as a keychain size to thank all the kind and compassionate people who came to my aid after a devastating car wreck. What size cord would you suggest for something like that?
That is a great idea, Karen. I would try it with embroidery floss. This would make an adorable tiny heart.
Loved the finished project but it could have been helpful to have a little more information. For instance, the button knot tutorial is not the same as the button knot in this design. I had to guess at the number of square knots used and, unfortunately, my cord ended up being too short for the long tassel featured in the image. Also, the directions called for a half hitch knot on the surrounding wrap. After several attempts at trying to get it to look like the image, I finally used a double half hitch so I’m not sure if that was incorrectly stated or if I’m wrong in my understanding of a half hitch knot. And lastly, I wish there would have been a way to incorporate the loop into the design vs just tying on a cord at the end.

Thank you for your suggestions! We will look back over the instructions and add in some notes to make it a bit more clear. Our understanding of a half hitch knot is that it is the same as a double half hitch or two hitch knots, some people also refer to it as a clove knot. We show how to tie a half hitch knot in our macrame videos however we will keep this in mind for future projects as we see how this could be confusing.
