VIDEO: Upcycled Paper Bag Succulents
We are about to celebrate our 10th anniversary here at Lia Griffith HQ, which has me reminiscing about my favorite craft projects we have made throughout these years. The paper succulent was one of my original posts, and I still see it as timeless and one of my favorite beginner projects. So for this month’s free workshop I am showing an updated version that anyone can make — these upcycled paper bag succulents!
Just check out our supplies list below to get started.

My team and I have made many variations of succulents over the years. But I have really wanted to create something that would be simple for anyone to make and wouldn’t require you to buy a bunch of supplies. One version that has been tapping me on the shoulder is to use recycled material and markers or colored pencils on hand. So besides a recycled grocery bag and color, all you need for this DIY craft are a pair of scissors and some glue.
This freebie includes the templates for three succulents in a PDF and an SVG file for cutting machines. The PDF is also arranged so every piece needed is on your print. This will give you the option to use the PDF printed onto cardstock as your material for the finished succulent if you choose a paper other than the kraft bag.
Ready to join us for the workshop? These upcycled paper bag succulents are a great project for a craft night with friends or a group of young crafters. So do share this link with anyone you feel would enjoy this project!
Skill level: Beginner
Crafting tip: You can pot these upcycled paper bag succulents like we did, or arrange them into a lush wreath like this one.

I’d love to try one of the 3 succulents, but the SVG file has all the images together, with no way to Ungroup them (since they’re not in a Group). So we need to cut all 3 types (a whole sheet) even if we want to try only one succulent type. Can this be fixed?
Yes. You can find them in this post: https://liagriffith.com/tutorial-for-seven-paper-succulents/
I love this project! I blogged about it: https://hawkandhandsawjewelry.com/succulents-for-the-plant-challenged/
I tested out printing on a paper bag (you’ll have to check out the post to see how it went :))
Thanks for your great craftiness.
That looks AMAZING! Thanks for sharing.
This is my first workshop that I watched, the replay, and I enjoyed it so much! You have a natural ease of doing things, garnered by many years of experience I’m sure, and I appreciate your attention to every detail that’s so helpful for a novice crafter like me. I look forward to learning about making the paper baskets in the future.
I am so happy you joined us! We do have a lot of fun every month, both with this series and other things on our site. 🙂
Thanks so much! I had some similar Kraft paper scrap on hand and it was perfect., enough for 2 each of the succulents plus an extra design from the archives. Absolutely love the results and want to make loads more! Love the colouring and accenting and using what’s on hand. Thank you so much for the tutorial!!!!
I love hearing that! I feel this project brings out creativity. 🙂
Hi, I’m in Australia and paper bags are not a regular thing. Could you tell me what weight (gsm) you think the bags generally are? TIA!
I have no idea, but you can use any cardstock for these. Even a brown Kraft if you want it to look similar to the bag.
The designers note must be hidden, but that alone doesn’t solve the compatibility problem. Cricut cannot cut a file wider that 11.5″ x 11.5″ on a 12″ mat. This file has a dimension over 11.7″. Keep the lock set on the file size adjustment so both dimensions are changed proportionally, choose 11.5 and the file will be compatible. Save this a the adjusted version.
Just downsize the template a bit. It will work.
Love this project! And would love to learn how to make that gorgeous paper basket!
Coming right up!
Bonjour , je ne retrouve pas la video succulents papier de recupération du 10 mars. merci
We will be filming that live in just two hours! You can watch the replay as well.
is there the monday wednesday friday classes this month? i cant seem to find them
Not this month. We will have a week-long cutting machine class launch party starting March 20. Stay tuned for that announcement. Also, if you go to the home page, (click the Lia Griffith logo) we put in a full-year course and event calendar for easy reference.
Problem solved! I just had to shrink it a tiny bit and my machine was happy!!
That works too!
Love these!! When I try to cut it on my Maker I get this message: “This project is not supported by your current machine selection. To resolve, select OK and adjust affected layers.” Thanks for any help you can give!!
Sometimes it helps to hide the designer’s notes.
Can’t wait for all your paper projects
Love to hear that. 😉
Great idea for a free workshop tutorial using recycled bags or unwanted paper to create beautiful plants! More like this please
Thanks for your feedback! I have a few paper bag projects I will be doing this year. 😉
