Fun in the Sun

These felt sunflowers are one of those projects that’s somewhere in between a beginner and intermediate skill level. One of the reasons we lean toward intermediate is because it takes a while to prep all the petals and fringe the center pieces. And if you are a beginner at these flower-making techniques, it might feel a little more complex or take longer.

When you are done crafting these felt sunflowers, you can spread a little sunshine by gifting them to a friend. Or keep them for yourself! These are big flowers, so they’ll look good on their own or as the centerpiece of an arrangement.

Skill level: Beginner-intermediate

Crafting tips: As with all of our felt crafts, we recommend cutting them by hand for a more precise cut. Using a pair of micro-tip scissors with a spring will really save your hand with all of the fringing! We also recommend using both hot glue and tacky glue for this project; tacky glue is more bendable when dried, which is helpful when constructing the circular center of your felt sunflower.

How to Make Felt Sunflowers

  1. Gather your craft tools and materials. Then download the flower pattern on the right hand side at the top of this post.
  2. Cut out felt according to the pattern using a Cricut Maker/Silhouette Cameo 4 (optional) or scissors. You will need to cut the fringe strip pieces by hand, because some require the full length of a sheet of felt (18″). Follow the measurements provided in the PDF for cutting each of your strips.
  3. Glue the 1/4″ light brown strip to the bottom edge of the 1/2″ mustard strip with tacky glue and the 1/4″ dark brown strip to the 1/2″ light brown strip. Dried tacky glue is more bendable compared to hot glued felt.
  4. Let the glue dry. Fringe each of the strips, about 2/3 of the way down the top.
