Become a MemberLast month we were approached by Porch.com and Wayfair.com to build and decorate a dollhouse for a charity of our choosing. A charity close to our hearts is Ronald McDonald House here in Portland, Oregon. Inspired by the need to support families far from home whose ill children are in Portland hospitals, the Oregon Medical Association Alliance (OMAA), Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, regional McDonald’s restaurant owner/operators, and community representatives built a Ronald McDonald House in here almost 25 years ago. It’s two locations here in Portland do such great work for families who need support during a difficult time and so donating to them seemed like the perfect choice.
Everyone on our team pitched in with at least cheers and oohs and ahhhs, but our illustrator Krista took the lead in creating all of the adorable details with the assistance of Jessica our craft and styling assistant. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to build this house for a family of bunnies so we picked out the Hopster family of four. To start the house project, a friend of ours, Tom from Jenike Development, designed and built the main house frame, the plans for which you can download here if you want to make your own dollhouse. After he completed the construction, we painted the inside and out white, added tiny wooden shingles to the roof, a little white picket fence around the outside, then set about planning the details and decor for the inside.
To finish the walls and floors we mod podged wallpaper that Krista designed with each room in mind. The kid’s room has walls decorated with deer, hedgehogs and little bunnies smelling the red mushrooms. The parent’s bedroom walls has a green and plum motif of mushrooms and branches. The bathroom is a classic grey stripe. The kitchen is a pretty gold polka dot wallpaper and the living room is a coordinating birch tree print. To finish all of the floors we used a wood veneer from Barc Wood and made a tile floor for the bathroom from a hexagon print. All of the doors, windows and floors were then trimmed with a thin balsa wood. The facing edge of the wood was also completed with the wood veneer cut into thin strips to give a finished look.
Time to move in the furniture and add the final decorative touches. All of the furniture for this bunny house is wooden and made by Hape. We selected six sets; the kid’s room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining room and living room furniture and painted some of the pieces in a neutral color to match our color palette. We made pillows, bedding, and rugs from wool felt and added tiny terry towels to the kitchen and bathroom. The colorful bathroom rug was made from gluing teal baker’s twine onto a felt circle.
To finish the kids room felt banners and pennants were made for the kits room with final touches of a red mushroom table top, felt mushroom rug and an “explore” painting on a small piece of wood mounted to the wall.
For the mom and dad bunny room their felt bedding and rug matches the wall paper perfectly and simple jumping bunny vinyl pieces were cut and placed on wood pieces to mount on the wall over the bed. A “Hello Sunshine” art piece is also mounted to the wall over the vanity and the tiny DIY cork and felt plant on the table gives this room its final touch.
The bathroom is just too adorable. With the DIY towel and rug in place the room is finished with two botanical prints over the bathroom tub. Another tiny felt plant in a cork pot graces the bathroom window.
The kitchen is a busy place. We found miniature crates, flour and sugar sacks and tiny carrots to fill the little jars. All are carefully glued into place to keep the kitchen tidy. The walls are finished with a botanical carrot print and the word EAT on a tiny wooden slab.
The dining room and living room are the hub of the home. The comfy sofa and chair hold little felt pillows to watch bunny TV and the fireplace is finished with tiny twigs and topped by another little DIY plant. The rooms art includes a family portrait, a grandma rabbit portrait and a birdhouse relief over the fireplace. Oh so cozy.
There were obvious restrictions to building and decorating the house to make it safe for children, but we embraced the challenge and had a lot of fun sourcing well made wooden furniture and making art works, textiles and accessories for our miniature world. Our color palette was inspired by the cool, dusky tones of early Spring and being lovers of Scandinavian design we kept our decor sleek and simple yet full of pattern and color. We used a variety of materials from mod podged paper, washi tape sheets, wood veneer, and a variety of felts and fabrics. Our tiniest of tiny accessories are all glued in place for safety when the the little kiddos get their hands on it. Our cute bunny family moved in today so all that remains is for us to take a trip up to our local Ronald McDonald branch and hand our dollhouse over. Check back in a couple of weeks to find out how we got on when we donated the home. Thanks to Porch.com and Wayfair for asking us to be involved in such a wonderful project! ~ Lia
Make sure you check out the other designer’s dollhouse which will be donated to a children’s hospital in their area. A Bubbly Life, Funky Junky Interiors, Makely Home and The Yellow Cape Code

For the floors do you think peel and stick tile would work? Also the stone looking backsplash squares for an accent wall. I know I would need to put some type of glue down to make sure it sticks.
That is a great idea! If you are putting it onto raw wood it might stick well without added glue.
Hello! We are trying to make on for my daughter for Christmas. What kind of glue did you use for the shingles?
Also did you use a glue gun to glue the wall decor on?
Hi! Yes we used a high-temp hot glue gun for the shingles and wall decor.
Hello,
I love your design and how everything is put together. I am looking for the wall paper you use in the parents’ bedroom and in the kitchen and couldn’t fin it in the printable. Would you mind telling me where i could find it? I am happy to purchase it. Thank you!
Those prints are from our Cricut Washi sheets! They have been discontinued but looks like a limited stock is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cricut-2002843-Washi-Sheets-Woodland/dp/B00XC1YBLS
So is some of the wallpaper sticky washi paper and some is paper that you modge poged on?
Thanks!
Hi Meredith, the wallpaper is paper that you can download and print out, then use mod podge to add it to your walls!
Just perfect! Thanks for sharing this good idea 😉
Beautiful dollhouse with so much detail, great job.
Thank you!!
Dear Lia,
I am writing to tell a BIG, BIG THANK YOU for the adorable dollhouse you made. It is perfect! And you inspired me to create a Fox dollhouse for my daughter. She received it this Christmas and plays every day since then!
You can see it via the link in my blog, if you are interested 🙂

Warmest wishes and a lot of inspiration to you!
Olena
That’s wonderful Olena! It’s beautiful, you did a stellar job.
hello!
beautiful house!!
I was wondering where you got the mini bunnies from?
my daughter would love them in her dollhouse.❤
They’re called Calico Critters, and you can find them online or at any major store that carries toys. They have much more than just bunnies, too!
So cute! My husband is making a dollhouse so similar to this design for Christmas for our daughter. We also discovered the calico critters and Hape furniture and ordered several rooms! One question – what kind of paint did you use for painting the furniture? Curious if you found a good safe option for little ones. Thank you!
We used mostly Martha Stewart acrylic paint, and coated it with some Modge Podge after.
Just curious where you got the tiny pictures?
We made a few of them and others just found online searching Google images 🙂
Hi Lia!
Quick question since I’ve never used mod podge before – when putting on the wallpaper, do you use mod podge to stick it onto the walls…and then again on the front side? Curious if that helps prevent the wallpaper from ripping easily. Thanks!
Hi! We used it just on the backside to adhere it to the walls, but it could be used on the front side as well– it would just give it a slightly glossy look 🙂
So cute! Is there a picture of the front?
Unfortunately there is not, but the house is just painted all around with the fence trim since it is sitting against a wall.
This is absolutely amazing. I’m going to replicate a lot of what you did for my daughter’s fifth birthday next month. One question, what did you use to make the bathroom floor look like tile?
If you’re a member, we have a PDF link available at the bottom of the post with printables for the wallpaper and floor tile.
Dear Lia,
I also wanted to ask you what was the height of the house? The drawing says that the walls are just 10” height, however it looks bigger on your pictures.
Thank you!
Olena
Each room (except the attic) is about 10″ tall. The furniture is just small in comparison. 🙂 The whole house was about 35″ tall.
Dear Lia, your dollhouse is amazing!!! I fell in love from the first site and gonna make the same for my daughter 🙂 Thank you for sharing!
I’ve already ordered the washi sheets with your beautiful owls, foxes and mushrooms and want to ask you, is it possible to purchase the digital paper with deers, bunnies and trees that was used in the kids bedroom? Or maybe there is a printed version also? I would happily buy it!
I was looking for something similar but can not found anything.
Thank you so much!
Olena
We just recently added a PDF of the printable wallpaper. Enjoy! 🙂
This dollhouse is precious! I’m in the process of making one similar for my daughter, including the Hape furniture. However, I am having such a hard time painting the pieces! I have little spots of paint everywhere I don’t want it to be! I got acrylic paints and mod podge as you suggested. Can you offer any painting advice?
The trick is to just use painter’s tape to mark off the areas you do not want to paint and a small brush to get into those tight spaces. For the doors I suggest painting the outside and edges first, letting it dry then paint the inside. You will probably need a couple coats of paint Hope that helps! I’m sure your daughter will love the final result. 🙂
Any idea where I can find the print used for the upstairs room? The mushroom/deer/tree/hedgie print? My daughter is gaga for it. Beautiful work!
Hi Regan, thanks for your kind comments! You can purchase our washi sheets online at cricut https://shop.cricut.com/en_us/supplies/cutting-materials/washi-sheet/cricut-washi-sheets-woodland.html
I’m glad your daughter loves our woodland design, we had such fun designing it 🙂 Best, Lia
Hello, I fell in love with your dollhouse the moment I saw it! Great job! I was wondering, as I am in the process of making my daughters first dollhouse, how did you find art that small to print? I haven’t had any luck! Also those adorable bunny vinyl, how did you get those so small? Thank you, I’d really appreciate any help.
I’m so glad that you like it!! It was definitely a team effort on our part. My illustrator Krista designed some of the little art pieces, and others we found on Google and shrunk them to size. You can try typing in “botanical prints” or something similar to find some cute images 🙂 We cut those bunny vinyls with our Cricut. I would suggest just browsing and seeing what you can find! Good luck!!
It beautiful ,I also want to make a doll house but I don’t know how to start ,i have no idea about materials required of can u help me?
Hi Sonia! You can see the instructions and supply list to build the doll house here: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/lia-griffith-media/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/liabunnyhutch.pdf Good luck!!
I was searching Pinterest for DIY dollhouses and came across the adorable pictures of yours. I wish I could buy it!! After reading through your post (and feeling SO inspired), I really just wanted to leave a comment saying THANK YOU for what you did for the Ronald McDonald house. It seems a little like fate that I should pick your dollhouse to read about when I myself have stayed in the Portland Ronald McDonald house when my son was first born at OHSU & was in the NICU for a few weeks. Then again when he had a surgical operation at 6 months old. They were such a blessing to us & I always give back to them thinking of all those other families that have been right where we are! So, thank you for your kindness & generosity!
Thank you for this amazing comment Leslie!! The Ronald McDonald house is a truly incredible organization (as you know very well!) and I was so grateful to have the opportunity to do something like this. I am so glad you happened upon this dollhouse and thrilled to hear that you like it! It does seem like fate 🙂 Happy New Year to you and your family!
I love, love, love this!! Did you glue the furniture in place? Or leave everything loose?
So glad you like it! For the most part we left everything loose. Is is a play house, so we wanted to make sure that kids could actually play with the pieces! We did glue down the pictures hanging on the walls and the various dishes because we wanted to reduce the choking hazards 😉
Is it possible to download those wallpapers?
The wallpaper that we used for the kitchen and the bedroom were actually washi sheets that we designed for Cricut, and you can find them in this pack here: https://shop.cricut.com/en_us/cricut-washi-sheets-woodland.html. As for as the other wallpapers, I would look through some of the gift wrap patterns that we have because any of those would be great for this! 🙂
I can’t get enough of this dollhouse. My daughters and son would love this! Where are the birch tree and woodland animal wallpaper from? Thanks!
You can find the birch tree design in this printable gift wrap post 🙂 https://liagriffith.com/printable-christmas-gift-wrap/
Ohhh !!! It’s wonderful!! I love it, genial!
Thank you. This project and the cause was near and dear to our hearts.
Your dollhouse is such an inspiration! I especially like how you repainted the Hape furniture. I am thinking of doing the same thing for my daughters dollhouse. What kind of paint did you use? Thanks!
Emily
Thank you so much, it was definitely one of our favorite projects. We used acrylic craft paint from Michaels.
I love everything about this! I have always loved all things miniature and now that I have a daughter of my own (she’s 3 y/o) I look forward to making a doll house for/with her!
Thanks. We were a bit sad to see it go. . . but happy for the kids who get to play with it.
This is such a perfectly sweet dollhouse! I can’t stop looking at all of the details! Would you be able to share how some of the Hape furniture was painted? I’m thinking about doing the same, but wasn’t sure how to approach it. Was it sanded first? What type of paint was used? Thank you!!
Hi, it was super simple. We used acrylic paint and then mod podge on top to seal and give it a glossy finish. No sanding needed.
I did this for my niece a few years ago. It is still my favorite thing I’ve ever made-so rewarding!
So sweet, and yes so rewarding!!
Lia,
thank you for making it totally acceptable for me to create and decorate a doll’s house . . . for myself!
And what family am I thinking of housing – well the kangaroos or koalas, of course 🙂
<3
Pia
I cannot wait to see pictures. How cute!!!
Gorgeous!
What I have been looking for is miniture doll furniture patterns for silhouette cameo of cardstock to make a cardboard doll house. Anyone else asked for this?
Sorry, I am not very familiar with the pattern library for the Silhouette.
It’s just precious. is anyone not enthralled looking through a doll house and all the miniatures? Your details are wonderful! I love the signs above the vanity mirrors. I may make a grown-up size of one of those.
Why not;-)
Adorable!! I especially love the birch tree wallpaper in the kitchen!! Might have to consider some remodeling plans for my 30 year old dollhouse!!
I know, never too old for some fun;-)
Congratulations for such an awsome work !!
It is absolutely breath-taking . Im really glad that there is stil creative people like you in the world .
Im a big fan of everything you do and I always visit your blog whenever Im looking for inspiration.
This beautiful world that you created actually drew a smile on my face the minute I saw it. It is a dream for me to be able to create and design, to make my own dreams and thoughts come to life. You make dreams come true. I mean, I am 18 and if someone gives me this nice house I would litteraly go crazy happy :)))) <3
Thank you so much!! Your comment made my day!!
What a lovely project, Lia. Pity our little girl is now 28 and thinks herself a bit beyond such things.
Ah well, suppose we’ll have to wait for the next generation, or some such!
I know what you mean, my daughter is also too old for it. Cannot wait for those little grandkids:-)
What a great doll house!
Thank you!!
Oh my gosh Lia and team!!!! This is a HOME RUN I can’t believe how cute this little house is!! I love it for me and my two girls of course we will be making one!!! I love it so much that I want to live in it!!
Thank you so much for your sweet comment!
This is precious! Each of my daughters has a dollhouse built for them by my dad, and they are badly in need of updating. Can you make the “wallpaper” available for printing? Thanks for sharing this project.
That is a great idea! We will make some of it available for print, cannot make all of it available yet and you will soon know why;-)
I love all the little details you took the time to add. Has the wallpaper become available to print yet? Thanks!
Some of the wallpapers are Washi sheets that I designed for Cricut, and you can find them on the Cricut website. Some of the other wallpapers are printable gift wraps that I have posted on the site 🙂 I would say to browse the gift wraps and choose which one you like the best for your wallpaper!
Oh, my goodness! How much fun is that? Love the attention to detail – handheld shower and low profile toilet? Oh my!! Tiny hangers with felt outfits glued in the armoire would be cute, if safe. . .and small enough.
What a great idea!!
That is adorable! So much attention to detail! I can imagine how much fun you had putting it all together. And for such a great cause! Thanks for sharing.
we had too much fun, feeling withdraws;-)
Oh wow…so cute, so clever, so creative!
When my kids were little and hurt or sad, I would create a distraction with a fun activity. This adorable dollhouse will surely provide a distraction for those whom need it most – and not just the kids, the adults too! It’s a wonderland inside that house…that family and heirloom grandma portrait – you can’t help but smile!
I hope it will bring lots of smiles!!
Oh my goodness… your ‘bunny’ house is absolutely PRECIOUS! I just love the furniture… and that wallpaper… swooning over the attic! 🙂
You and your team did such a wonderful job! I hope some dollhouse companies come knocking for your expertise!
You are too sweet. Thank you:) We had a blast!
This came out so beautiful, I used the Haba furniture in mine as well, love the cute wooden furniture!
I know, they just have the cutest furniture! This was so much fun, we are already having withdrawls;-)
