How to Make a Halloween Pumpkin Diorama
Begin by cutting a hole in one side of your craft pumpkin with a craft knife and painting the inside a soft grey-blue color. We wanted our paper scene to be clearly visible, so we made a little hill using air drying clay — perfect for our spooky house and bare bone trees to sit upon. Once your clay hill is dry, cover it entirely with a layer of lush green moss. You can see our steps in the tutorial below.
To make the paper house, tree, and garden fence we cut the designs using our Cricut Explore cutting machine. You can find the little house and other details in both an SVG cut file and a PDF template in this post. We used a black metallic card stock from Michaels, which is slightly shimmery on one side, and vellum paper for the little floating ghosts. Our paper craft projects are put together and secured in place on the mossy hill with a little hot glue. Pop a flickering LED light in the back behind the hill and one in the haunted house, and you have yourself the perfect Halloween decoration!

Hello Lia,
I made the diorama for my daughter-in-law and used Glam Glitter paper from Paper Crafts to make the house, tree, and fence. I added the battery tea lights, but it wasn’t as lit up as I would have liked. My daughter-in-law added blue lights which gave it a whole new dimension of a dark night making it really spooky! A really fun craft for me that her whole family will enjoy. Thanks for making it available.
How fun! Love the blue lights, great idea. We love seeing photos if you want to share! hello@liagriffith.com 🙂
Really cute!
Thank you!
What a wonderful idea for a faux pumpkin!!! Cute as can be!
Thank you so much:-) We had so much fun making this!
Not sure what happened with my download but I can’t figure out how to put the house together. Some of the pieces shown on the mat do not cut out as shown and I there we extra vertical cuts in the paper between pieces. The only thing that was easy to assemble was the tree, fence and the ghosts!
Hi Raquel. Note that the vertical lines in the different color are for scoring. You will have to set that in Design Space. Here is the tutorial for making the little house. This may help too: https://liagriffith.com/paper-craft-haunted-house/
Looks amazing! Is there any chance I can do the project with real pumpkin? I cannot get craft pumpkins where I live.
Yes, however it will not last forever.
wow! this is just stunning.. Compliments 🙂
Thanks Eliza!
This is TOO awesome!! heart-eyed emojis forever!
Thanks Jen. xoxox
Absolutely love this diorama. Love making things like this and will enjoy every minute of it. Will there be PDF’s of pieces contained in diorama? Pretty please? Recognize the paper used as have used it before or something similar, can buy at Michaels. Has wonderful texture to work with.
Keep up great work, love all your projects. Want to make felt finger puppets also. Was thinking of making some in sturdy paper to sit on shelf, they are sure adorable. Happy week to you all.
Yes we will have those up today!! 😉
Very pretty! can’t wait to get the download!
