Homemade Halloween Costumes: No-Sew Superheroes
It is day two for our homemade Halloween costumes, and today I am giving you a twofer! (That would be a “two in one”). Superhero costumes are a classic and we made these for our Lightning Boy and Star Girl. We went with purple and blue for these no-sew superhero costumes. But you can choose your child’s favorite colors for their custom costume.

I used some of our beautiful wool blend felt in purple and blue. I purchased coordinating fabrics for the cape (1 yard per cape is plenty), a half yard of iron-on fuze, and 2 yards of elastic ribbon and iron on velcro at my local fabric store.
You can download and print the pattern using the buttons below, which includes the mask, belt, armbands and the logo for the back of their capes. For tools, you will need sharp fabric scissors, pinking shears for the cape, an iron, and a hot glue gun. I love to use pinking shears for no-sew projects to keep any edges from fraying with the zig-zag cut.
Once you have gathered all of your materials and tools, I have prepared a step-by-step tutorial to show you how I assembled these no-sew superhero costumes. Both costumes are made with similar steps. Once the felt pieces are cut for the costumes, simply cut a layer of fuse for all of the small decorative pieces and one layer for the two large pieces of mask felt. I prefer the fuse over hot glue for most of the pieces as it has a nice flat finish. However, I did glue the elastic ribbon onto the neck of the cape and added an extra hold with glue on the velcro for the armbands. Next we will show you an easy no-sew grown-up costume. Our own Anna is going to be running in a Halloween 10K and needed a clever costume for her team. See what we whipped up for her tomorrow! ~ Lia

What type of glue do you use? I was also hoping the pattern was free as advertised on other websites? I am trying to make the boy superhero costume.
Hi Rachel,
We used hot glue and iron-on fusible adhesive.
HI, is there a material list in conjunction with this “pattern”? (calling it a “pattern” because the PDF is just images, no supporting text.)
Hi Kate,
Some of our older projects like this one do not have a list of specific materials used, the materials used in this project are mentioned at the start of the post.
What did you use for the actual suits (the shirts and pants, or are they a one piece), and what material are they? Or did you make those yourself?
Also, what materials are the capes made of?
Hi! The suits are actually matching tops & pants from Old Navy (this was a few years ago, keep in mind!). I picked up the fabric for the capes at my local fabric shop– I can’t remember exactly what it was but just a basic cotton blend that had a bit of stretch to it. It doesn’t need to be expensive (unless you plan to wash the cape often!)
they do not appear to be FREE templates after all!!! How very disappointing……
Hi Kirsty! This may have been advertised as a Free patten on other sites, but it’s not– so sorry for the confusion!! What pattern were you interested in?
