Become a MemberThough they may look fancy, these Paper Papel Lanterns are surprisingly beginner-friendly! We recommend using your cutting machine for this project to get those sharp cutouts. Beyond that, putting these lanterns together couldn't be easier. Simply cut, fold, glue, and watch your creation come to life. Add an LED tea light, and voilà – instant ambiance!
In the rich tapestry of Latin American culture, lanterns hold a special place as symbols of celebration and unity. They illuminate streets and homes during festivals, weddings, and other joyous occasions, fostering a sense of warmth and camaraderie. With these Paper Papel Lanterns, you can embrace this tradition and infuse your home with a hint of that same festive spirit.
We used a mix of our Vellum Paper Pack and crisp white cardstock to make our Paper Papel Lanterns, but feel free to go bold! I can see this lantern in fiery red, sunshine yellow, or even a bold black for dramatic effect. The beauty of this project is that it's all about customization – make it your own!
Once complete, these Paper Papel Lanterns are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser and the perfect way to light up the night. Add them to your table for a unique centerpiece, or use them to decorate your Cinco de Mayo get-together. However you style them, don't forget to share with us on Instagram using #MadeWithLia.

Hi! I downloaded the template but my Silhouette Studio software says the file isn’t supported. It could be user error – I’m still fairly new to using cut files – but everything else that I’ve downloaded from your site has been successful, so I’m not sure what’s going on here. Do you have any thoughts on this error message?
Thanks so much!
Shannon
I just tested the file on my Cricut and it seems to be okay there. I am not as familiar with Silhouette, but we have a full class and workbook that Kelly made for using our SVG files. Check it out here: https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-silhouette-cameo/
Thank you! I’ve actually taken that class – it’s fantastic! – but had forgotten to extract the zipped file. For other zipped files, double clicking worked, but this one required the “extract” step. In any case, I’ve got my file and am excited to make some of these paper lanterns. Thanks, again!
Oh good! Enjoy!
How do I make these? Are there instructions for my Maker 3? I’m new to this.. I’ve forgotten how this works. Is there a video instruction?
Hi Diana! These are a basic cut where you can use your fine point blade. So you can use the Maker 3, yes. We have a full skill course on using the Maker that you might enjoyable. This lessons shows how to cut the cardstock. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/3-cutting-scoring-cardstock/
