Paper Cut Winter Scene in a Glass Dome
We just can’t get enough of the white paper cut winter scenes! First you saw the paper lanterns featuring the trees, deer, fox and rabbit, then the three layer winter village and now here is a glass dome filled with a white paper woodland scene. How pretty is this? We did cut this paper scene with the Cutting Machine so you can download the SVG file for this winter decoration. For those of you who do not have a personal cutting machine, there is also a PDF template that you can download at the end of the post. I found the 4.5 inch wide by 8 inches tall glass and wood dome right here on Amazon. The inside sheet of paper was cut from a frosted vellum. The other parts of the scene are cut from simple white paper. Once assembles and arranged, I placed 4 flameless (battery operated) tea lights stacked inside the inner circle. You can find these lights at your craft store. After you have your scene lit, place the dome over your paper cut artwork. This is a beautiful and elegant way to decorate for the holidays and it would also make a gorgeous handmade gift.

Why is it that I download the 3d winter village dome lantern and it goes to cricut from my downloads but then I can’t find it? Where is it?
Hi Jackie! There are a few steps when using SVG files. We have a full Skill Course for this and you can see the steps in the lesson one: https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/a-crafters-guide-to-the-cricut-maker/lessons/1-lia-griffith-files-for-the-cricut/
hi, I’m new with a cricut, doesn’t using just regular paper stick bad to the mat, mine wouldn’t come off without ripping really bad, what did I do wrong
Hi Debra! Welcome to the world of Cricut. It sounds like you are using a new mat that is too sticky for your paper. It has happened to all of us! Try using an older mat or pat the sticky side of your mat onto your shirt or sweater to soften the stick a bit. Since you are new to Cricut, here are a few videos you might find helpful for other materials too: https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/how-to-use-files-cricut/

Hi, I have cut out the design and it is beautiful. I have tried clicking on the link for the picture instructions to put together, but it is coming up with error 404, page not found. Is there any other link for this please?
Thanks Hilary
Hi Hilary,
There is not a photo tutorial for this project, there are notes for assembly in the PDF template.
Hello Lia,
I uploaded the design . What are the sizes of each cut? Are they kept the size that they upload as? I realize it is to fit inside a 4 by 8 dome. PS your designs are lovely, every one is beautiful.
Hi Susan,
We have been having issues with design space where the SVG files are being downsized. Please contact cricut customer care so that we can get them to fix this issue 🙂 In the meantime we have updated the SVG to include the correct sizing!
Rockstars!
I have a Cricut Explore aire, will the SVG file work with that machine?
Yes!
Hi there,
This winter scene is amazing and I want to try it but I cannot see any downloadable files for Silhouette. I cannot use SVG files on my machine and don’t have the patience to cut from pdf 🙂 Can somebody help please?
You’ll need the designer edition of the Silhouette software to convert SVG files to .Studio files. Silhouette’s customer service can probably give you more guidance if needed!
Instead of using this in a dome as pictured, I used just two of the panels, cut them on my Cricut on black card stock and glued them around the base of a large LED candle. Makes a great focal point of a centerpiece.
Thanks for another quality project!
Great idea!!
I bought winter lantern kit at Joanns as well – went to site you recommended but when I select where the instructions are supposed to be it takes me to this page – and no instructions – really would like to make these – help!
Hi Linda, we’re so sorry for the confusion– the photo tutorial has been added to this page: https://liagriffith.com/joann-handcrafted-holiday-kits/
I have looked at the links you provided above for instructions, but I cannot find any. I have two problems: 1. the entire configuration is not stable – everything seems a little wobbly and nothing seems to fit well and, in lieu of directions, I just assumed we were to use the slit tabs to form each layer into a circle. The images stick out at all angles and I am wondering if this effect was intended to provide dimension, or should I have rolled the images to encourage them to line up with the circular base shape?2: how do you suggest gluing the acetate into a roll (sorry I cannot seem to spell, well, the correct name of the shape) I’ve used a clear really sticky tape having overlapped the two ends about 1/4″ but this seam is still very visible. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Elisa, thanks for your comment. We added a photo tutorial to this page: https://liagriffith.com/joann-handcrafted-holiday-kits/ We used hot glue then washi tape to close the acetate cover, but have seen others just use clear tape. The layers will stick out here and there as it adds dimension to the design. I hope you’re able to assemble it with our photo tutorial!
I bought this kit at Joann’s and have no idea how to make these. Is there a place with Instructions on how to put this together? Thanks so much
Yes! I’m so sorry about the missing instructions– unfortunately, that was an oversight by the manufacturing company. You can watch the video tutorial here! https://liagriffith.com/joann-handcrafted-holiday-kits/
I can not find the instructions or tutorial either. Could you please upload again, because I really would like to make this project
Check out the video here: https://liagriffith.com/joann-handcrafted-holiday-kits/ 🙂
I still don’t see the instructions. I bought the kit and would love to put it together.
Hi Renee, the photo tutorial has been added to this page: https://liagriffith.com/joann-handcrafted-holiday-kits/
I just made both of the globe scenes using my scan n cut . Worked fine. One question, how did you stack the lights inside the winter scene. Mine keep wanting to topple over. Thanks so much.
Gail
Hi Gail! I like to use glue dots to keep them stacked 🙂
Hi Lia,
I have been following your work fo awhile now I just love it. My husand is getting me a cuting machine but I don’t know which to get Shilouette or Cricut.. what do you think and why?
I really really want to thank you in advance for yor help
Jan
I personally LOVE the Cricut and believe me. . . they DO NOT pay me to say that. I wish they would. Haha. I have written several posts on why I love Cricut and here is a little video I did about a year ago. Since then I actually did a class with Craftsy doing a Cricut 101 class. https://liagriffith.com/cricut-explore-versus-silhouette-cameo-comparison-video/
Hope this helps.
Hey Lia, this is such a wonderful pattern. This is the first time I want to make these for christmas. My question is: How did you place the candles into the circle?
We used LED candles, so you don’t need to worry about the paper catching on fire or anything 😉
If I had a cricut explore or the patience to cut this out I SO would! This is amazing! I made the lanterns but didn’t cut it out because it would look cool when the light turned on the image would appear, but this one needs cut out, but still, amazing! 😀
The Cricut does open up looots of possibilities for doing projects like this 🙂 So glad you like it!!
Lia, I just found your gorgeous work and have pinned this project. It is exactly what I want to place on my mantel this year (2015). I am not sure how to place the pattern pieces so it looks like the picture. I have a cloche and base to put over the piece. Can you help me either with pictures or text (or both?)? Thank you so much!
Hi, it goes from the shortest layer to the tallest layer with the tallest layer on the inside. Happy crafting!
I love this idea. However, I have having trouble figuring out how to separate the images so that they can be enlarged. When I imported it into the cricut design space, it was all one image and therefore when I try to enlarge it to make the tallest one 6.5″ wide, it does not fit onto one sheet of paper. What am I doing wrong or what can I do to fix this?
Cricut automatically groups all layers/images together so you will need to un-group them after you enlarge them. It is usually good that they are grouped together when there are multiple layers so they are all proportional:-)
There is no option for me to un-group them. It is all just one image. Any other suggestions?
You need to click on the image so that it has the binding box around it. The in the right hand bar there should be the option to un-group:-)
I’ve tried to download the SVG file again thinking that maybe it downloaded wrong, but it keeps downloading into a zip file and then will not open in my Cricut Design Space. Am I doing something wrong or is there another/better way to download this file? I’m running out of ways to try to figure this out. Thanks!
You need to unzip the file (click and open) then upload the svg to Design Space. Hope that makes sense!
I just cut this using the svg file on my explore and it cut tiny. What did I do wring?
You need to resize it in Design Space, we cut the largest on 8 1/2×11″ Unfortunately this design was done prior to Cricut’s software update, now luckily it saves all the sizes as designed.
Love the woodsy lantern with the globe,we live in the country and see deer alot,How Beautiful
Sounds lovely!
Thank you so much, this is the first SVG I have tried to download. My daughter just moved to Colorado and is working as a CYF minister. She wants to decorate her office woodsy on a budget. This may be the start.
How fun that you get to help your daughter decorate her office! I am honored to have my projects included:)
Love your designs. Cant wait to try them. Thank you
You are welcome and thank you!!
Gorgeous, just found you through Pinterest. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work.
Off, to look around your blog.
thanks again and Happy New Year.
Patti
Yay, I am so happy you found me!!!! Welcome and Happy New Year:)
Lia,
I am new to paper crafting. I have the Cricut Explore. I have successfully downloaded and imported the SVG file into my Cricut Design Space.
My question is what size should each of the images be cut at? I see your previous post about the 6.5 inch width but when I enlarge all the images in the SVG file together I get a message that says area too large for mat. Can you please provide the individual cut sizes for each item?
I am a rookie so if there is an easier way to figure this out/understand I welcome the opportunity to learn. I feel like this should be much easier and maybe I am over thinking it. Thanks
Hi Dawn, welcome to the paper crafting world:) I cut mine on 8×11 1/2″ so the width ends up being around 10 1/2″.
Oh… It’s beautiful…
Thank you so much! It was one of my favorites this year:)
Vielen Dank, das ist ja wunderschön! Danke für die Bereitstellung der Datei und… das noch kostenlos!!!
Weihnachten pur! 1000 DANK!
😉
I was wondering , did you use card stock, or just printing paper?
I just really thin paper including vellum so that the light shows through.
Thank you so much for this beautiful inspiration. I am trying to use scissors and an exacto knife. By plain white paper do you mean printing paper, or card stock? I tried the printing paper and it seems to flimsy and not quite the look that you have. Thanks for your help.
I used vellum and text weight paper.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful snow globe.
You are welcome, I love mine sitting on my mantle.
i just wanted to let you know i love the nature scenes you have created and I am making them as gifts for my family. I too have been having trouble getting the sizes of the dome layers where they need to be but did read that they should be sized together. Mine just don’t seem to be long enough but will try again. Thank you for your graciousness.
🙂
Hi–Thanks so much for sharing!!! I am also having difficulty opening the SVG file in my silhouette software. When I open it it opens into a web page. I cannot open it the Silhouette Designer Edition.
Thanks for any help
🙂
Hi Tracey, sorry it isn’t working. It should, maybe you can contact the Silhouette Customer Service team and ask them to help you trouble shoot. I don’t have a Silhouette so I have no idea what is going on. Hope you can get it to work:)
Just discovered your amazing site and spent my day off cutting with an X-acto knife the winter globe, the lantern and the winter village.Thank you very much for the pdf files .you are a talented girl and I am very happy !!!
Welcome to my site. My motto is to inspire, create and reignite creativity so I am happy to share what I do.
Thank you – wonderful idea!
🙂
Love this winter scene. However, when I download the SVG file and unzip it the WinterGlobe.svg does not act like a cut file, instead when clicked on it tries to open this page in IE. My Make the Cut software does not recognize it at all.
Okay, it sounds like you do have a cutting machine then. Have you used an SVG with this software before? It might be a different kind of upload. Here is a video I found, (thought I don’t use the software so it may not be helpful to your issue) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IZdCJ2ndeo
If that doesn’t help, see if there are instructions on how to upload SVG files into Make The Cut.
Oh WOW! This is absolutely Beautiful! I must make this for the Holiday this year-Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Elegantly lovely. 😉
Love this! I was wondering how you stacked the tea lights.
I just dropped one in after the other on top of each other.
Love this! I’m going to try downsizing it, but was wondering how you stacked the tealights.
Make sure you make the inner piece large enough to hold the tea light. So I used the flameless, turned them one and one at a time dropped them down into the inner tube. Since the tube just fits the lights, they stack nicely.
please tell me the cut file size, once I get it on my computer and ready to cut. I can not determine the size the image should be. Thanks, this is a lovely project
We used an 8.5×11 paper. The inter paper (tallest with stars) is 6.5 inches wide. Enlarge the others at the same time so they all fit. Does this help?
Hi Lia,
I have been enjoying your website so much! You are so talented and it is great to get a creative nudge to get to work on something beautiful. So, thank you. I am going to try the winter scene; I don’t have a Cricut, but I took the template to be slightly enlarged. I am a fiend with an X-Acto knife! But I am confused as to the arranging of the order of cuttings. Can you help?
Wow! You will have to share photos when you are done. The order is the tallest to the shortest. When you attach the bands to make circles, you will see how they get larger around with each layer that gets shorter.
Thank you so much! This is absolutely adorable…so Christmas-like!
Thank you. I love watching mine lit on the mantel as it is getting darker outside. So cozy:)
Добрый вечер! “У нас уже вечер”. Очень красивая поделка. Каждый день восхищаюсь Ващим фантазиям. Спасибо за идеи.
Enjoy:)
Very beautiful! I just bought a Cricket Explorer. Haven’t had a chance to try it. But I am anxious now that I saw what you have Created. Wow! You certainly have talent. I will be watching for more of your ideas. Thank you!
Enjoy your new machine! I have lots of fun projects on my site for you to try:)
This project is just as beautiful as the lanterns and village. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent! I made several of the villages to share with family and friends. Mine is on our mantle, lit with tiny LED lights.. I plan to also make lanterns and now the new project.
Wonderful!
You make so many amazing things like this. I could never create stuff that’s this awesome!
Thanks Liz! You can now with our templates. 😉
