Become a MemberContinuing with our mission to fill the world with extra fine crepe, we have these gorgeous crepe paper Icelandic poppies! I have to say that I love these flowers. They are fairly easy to make, especially compared to crepe paper Juliet roses that I shared last week. Because real Icelandic poppies come in all sorts of colors, you can really play around with a variety of papers for these. These crepe paper Icelandic poppies are also a great project for anyone who is just getting into paper flower making!
Start by gathering your crepe for this project. The extra fine paper is perfect for creating the delicate waves that you see in real poppy petals. We made our bouquet of poppies using Coral paper, but they would also look great in Vanilla, Chiffon, Honeysuckle, Blush or White. We used Juniper for the leaves and the green centers of the poppies, and then added in more leaves using Fern. All of the stamen are made with the Chiffon color. Once you have your crepe ready, you will also need 20mm cotton spun balls, 18 gauge floral wire, floral tape and a little bit of text weight paper for the crown in the centers of the flowers. Print the PDF template below to use as a guide for cutting your crepe flower pieces. After cutting your petals, set them aside and prepare your stems.
Tools
- Cricut Maker or Silhouette Cameo 4 (recommended)
- Craft Scissors
- Pinking Shears
- Low-Temp Hot Glue Gun
- Needle-Nose Pliers/Wire Cutters
Materials
- Lia Griffith Extra Fine Crepe Paper – Coral, Chiffon, Juniper, Fern
- Lia Griffith’s Favorite Frosted Gold Paper Pack
- Floral Tape — Fern & Moss
- 20mm Cotton Spun Paper Balls (24 pack)
- 18-Gauge Green Paper Covered Wire
Follow the step-by-step tutorial below for crafting your crepe paper Icelandic poppies! If you are making Chiffon petals, you can create some variation from the Chiffon stamen by using an art marker to add a bit more of a yellow-y color to the stamen. Add the crown to the center with hot glue. Use the SVG version if you have a cutting machine, or find the hand-cut version on the PDF template. In the last steps of the tutorial, I mention that you should kerfuffle the flowers before gifting or displaying them. This simply means to ruffle the petals and stamen so everything falls into place naturally.

Bello Lia, can i use 180g italian crape paper toate make the flowers crom your blogg? Thx love You.
Of course! Use whatever you have and love to work with.
Can you estimate how many poppies one can make with the Materials List and Instructions that requires:
1 pkg Coral Extra Fine Crepe Paper
1 pkg Chiffon Extra Fine Crepe Paper
1 pkg Cypress Extra Fine Crepe
I want to make a backdrop and need to figure out how much paper to purchase.
Thanks!
Here’s what you’ll get from each roll, depending on how close together you cut everything: 9-10 poppies from Coral, 54 fringed centers from Chiffon, and 350+ centers from Cypress. Have fun!
Hi Lia ! I see you do not have the punch for the centers of the poppies. if i buy one online what size punch to buy for that. I cant tell the sizes for flowers. Would a 5/8 size work ? Or would it be to little ! Thank you ! I hope you see this !!💞💟
This is our punch we came out with after this project was posted! https://www.joann.com/lia-griffith-lever-punch-flower-center-star/15892938.html#start=1
There is nothing in that page.
Here is an updated link to the punch for the center of this flower! https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-126790-1001-Griffith-Flower-Center/dp/B07DLPXS6D/ref=asc_df_B07DLPXS6D/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=284703445831&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9981912085707152882&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9061082&hvtargid=pla-490061451271&psc=1
I just wondering if you could post a SVG of the poppy petals.
Done! 🙂
Thank you!
I am having so much fun using your crepe paper and tutorials for my flowers. Can you tell me where to find the foam balls and other shapes for centers? My craft store carries styrofoam, which does not work well.
Thank you.
We like to use the FloraCraft brand (found at Michaels), or this brand: http://www.smoothfoam.com/product/balls/10006.html
What size foam ball do you use for the center?
The foam balls are 3/4″
Can crepe paper be cut with the circut?
I would not cut crepe on a Cricut (though it would be so much easier!). It will stretch and not cut correctly.
Good morning Lia! I’m making these poppies as my centerpieces for my wedding in July. With that said, I have the task of cutting about 2000 petals out. I know above you mentioned the Cricut machine wouldn’t cut the petals out correctly. Do you think it would make a difference if the crepe paper was stacked to give it more bulk/mass?
Thank you for your time!
~Meredith
Hi Meredith, congrats on your upcoming wedding! I’m so happy you’ve found our flowers to add to your day 🙂 Unfortunately, we just haven’t found a way to cut crepe on the machine. It’s too delicate and rips off the mat. If you find a way– please let us know!
Hi Lia, these have been the absolute most beautiful flowers yet!! I made 6 so far, using both your paper and the 180 wt. They are stunning! Can you give tell me where I can post so you can see them? Thanks
That’s wonderful, Sue! You can send us photos, hello@liagriffith.com or post them on Facebook page 🙂
This might be a dumb question but I didn’t see the answer anywhere in the post… what leaf template did you use? I just made a dozen of these in your gold crepe paper (which looks amazing!!!) And I’m staring at them like something is missing!! The leaves! Did I miss the instructions for them somewhere? Thank you for the awesome flower though!!!
You can find the leaves in the pattern for the Crepe Paper Juliet Rose post. They make a great filler!
Hi Lia ~ I’m totally loving the crepe flowers – as well as everything else. The paper colours are gorgeous and look quite real. I’ve got a bit of a shopping list for next time I come to the States. At least crepe isn’t too heavy. Your talent (and the team’s) is awesome! Thank you.
Thank you for your lovely comment Robin, it’s much appreciated!! 🙂
Lia, these are stunning 🙂
Thank you so much Janet 🙂
I’m going to be making some tonight with your GORGEOUS new paper!!!!! 🙂
Thanks,
Sue
That’s wonderful! Feel free to share your final result with us via email, we would love to see!
What a beautiful flower!!
Thank you Liesbeth!
