This month’s theme is all about what you might find in your garden. And one thing we are always spotting in the summertime is butterflies! Designed by Emily, these paper butterflies are an easy craft project and a fun addition to any potted plant or flower arrangement.
All you need are a few simple tools and materials plus our print-then-cut file or printable template below.
Give someone butterflies
You can keep these paper butterflies for yourself or gift them to a loved one. We personally think they look so pretty stuck into a paper plant (like our hoya obovata), but you could also use them in real plants or bouquets. Of course you could also leave the wire off and find another creative way to use these paper butterflies.

Tools
- Cricut Cutting Machine (if using Print-Then-Cut file)
- Craft Scissors
Materials
- Cardstock Paper – White
- Yes Paste or Glue Stick
- Floral Wire – 24-Gauge Paper Covered White
Instructions
- Gather tools and materials. Then download the pattern below.
- Cut both sides of butterflies with cutting machine or scissors. If you need help with the print-then-cut feature in Design Space, be sure to check out our video, Using JPG files in Design Space.
- Lay matching pieces side by side, white side up, and cover one piece with a thin layer of glue.
- Place wire along the body of the butterfly and place the back over the top, sandwiching the wire between.

Leave a CommentI have made similar butterflies for arrangements, can’t wait to try these. My tip is take the wire about half way down and wrap around a small dowel (about 1/4″) approximately 8 times. It makes the butterflies springy!
That is a great idea!
Finally, figured it out after watching the video several times. My Cricut Maker does not have the advanced feature. Then it would not cut the little cutouts. But all in all a good beginners project! And I like having the worksheet rather than taking notes. Thanks!
Have you updated your software? I do think all of the Makers should have that option.
Hi, such a lovely tutorial. Which programme was the original drawing done on please? Do you use something like procreate? Or was it simply hand-drawn. I’d like to start doing my own drawings too. Thank you
Those were designed by Emily who uses a combination of hand drawings and Procreate. 🙂
Can this file be made into an SVG file so I can use my Cameo3?
Since this is a print and cut we offered it as a JPG. You can use that on your Cameo as well.
My cricut isn’t picking up the file , just cutting a boarder around the butterflies
Hi Linda – you will need to “erase” the white background around the butterflies in Design Space. Check out the video linked under INSTRUCTIONS, that should help!

I can not download the butterflies either. Just get the picture no download button.
Is the picture opening up in a new window (similar to how our photo tutorials are opened)? Some browsers default to that setting. So you just need to right-click the photo and select “Save Image As…” or drag the JPG onto your desktop or folder where you want to save it.
No, I have never had a problem before. I want to print and cut on my Cricut, but still cannot get to download the butterflies. I may just have to cut them out, but really would like to do on the Cricut. Thanks
The print-then-cut file is a Jpeg– those usually open in a new browser window, so make sure your pop-up blocker is not active?
Love these but cannot get to download. Text to “Click, download and Print” comes up, instead of the butterflies. I tried in Safari and Chrome. Help….Thanks
