Lotus be at peace

While we do a lot of crafting for fun, we also like to look at the origin of and meaning behind what we make. The lotus flower is symbolic in Buddhism and meditation practices, representing non-attachment and enlightenment. It’s also an important symbol in Hinduism, standing for purity and peace.

Our pattern and tutorial below will show you how to make a felt lotus flower as well as the leaves and pod. Once assembled, you can arrange them altogether in a pretty vase with a wide neck or a low planter.

Skill level: Intermediate

Crafting tip: We recommend using a cutting machine if you’re making more than one felt lotus due to the amount of petals needed for each flower.

How to Make a Felt Lotus Flower

  1. Gather your craft tools and materials. Then download the pattern on the right hand side at the top of this post.
  2. Cut out felt according to template using a cutting machine with a rotary blade (recommended) or scissors.
  3. To make the flowers: Wrap and glue the lotus center pod piece around the tapered end of a thick stem wire, forming a cone shape. Stuff with a bit of fiber filling and glue on the top piece (the top edges do not need to match up).
  4. Fringe the stamen strip piece. If you used scallop scissors on the top edge, carefully cut down between each scallop.
