Cardstock & Vellum Luna Moths
I’m so excited to add another moth-themed craft to the website with these Cardstock & Vellum Luna Moths. Beautiful and mysterious, the moth may not get as much love as her more colorful sister, the butterfly, but to me, they’re just as lovely. We think these lunas would look so magical placed amongst the leaves of your outdoor plants or strung up with some fairy lights for some added whimsy.
These DIY cardstock and vellum luna moths are a breeze to put together once you download and print out the template. When you’re ready to get started, scroll down to the step-by-step instructions below.

A Luna Event
Nicknamed the American Moon Moth, Lunas are one of North America’s insect superstars! These nocturnal beauties are well-known for their delicacy and impressive wingspan. Because of their powerful attraction to light, they’re seen as a symbol of rebirth and renewal.
Though they’re most often seen with light green and white wings, we wanted to design our lunas with the colors of the night sky. Deep purple, navy, and translucent white bring to mind a beautiful nighttime tapestry — perfect for a good-luck visit from the elusive Luna moth.
To make these, simply cut your pieces according to the template. Glue your vellum paper onto the backside of the wings, then fold the body piece in half on each side. Next, glue the halves together, line up the wings, and add a clip to hold it tight. Set your moth aside to dry, and voila! You’re all done. One question got answered. I reloaded the file and the vellum is a perfect fit. Just waiting on the answer of the the other two questions. Thank you so much!
Oh good!
Love these! Three questions. What kind of clip did you use on the back? Is there a reason this moth isn’t one piece with a score line down the middle? Is the vellum purposely not fitting the moth’s body? Thank you so much.
I just used some mini clips to hold them until they are dry. You can attach a string between the layers and hang them or create a hole in the layered folds and wire them onto you light.
For the two pieces, we decided to make them separate because it gave the center more strength and weight. If you want to make it one piece, you can weld them in Design Space.
Thank you!
Is there a SVG?
Our mistake. They are there for you now. 😉
There is no link to download these gorgeous moths.
Whoops! They are up now. 😉
