Throughout this Master Class, we'll focus on recreating natural structure through crepe paper. We'll begin by building individual Crepe Salal Leaves with realistic shape and texture. Then, we'll arrange them along slender branches, paying attention to direction and placement so the finished stem feels loose and organic rather than perfectly symmetrical. As you work, consider how each leaf changes the silhouette of the branch and where a gentle bend might create more movement.


Salal grows naturally as an evergreen shrub along the Pacific coast of North America, where its sturdy branches are covered in broad, glossy leaves. That fullness has also made salal a favorite in floral design. Rather than competing with statement blooms, the leaves create a strong foundation around them, filling larger spaces while guiding the overall shape of an arrangement.

Although our Crepe Salal Leaves make a beautiful greenery arrangement all on their own, this project is also part of a much bigger garden. Later in the series, we'll pair these broad leaves with the lush color of our Crepe Coral Sunset Peony and the delicate texture of our Crepe Lady Fern. Together, each botanical brings something different to the composition.

Finally, we'll put those ideas into practice in our Paper Flower Garden Arrangement Workshop, where Salal helps establish the framework for the entire design. You'll also get to see how thoughtful greenery can create room for focal flowers, connect contrasting textures, and give a finished arrangement its natural sense of movement.
