Felt Tiger Lily
Spot On
Tiger lilies are showy flowers, with striking spots and dramatically curved petals. Our felt version captures both, and it has a few surprises of its own.

In fact, our Felt Tiger Lily is a beginner-to-intermediate project with a couple of techniques you won't find in our other felt flowers.
First, we'll cut the petals from Lia Griffith Wool Blend Felt. Then we'll wire each petal, so you can bend it into that sharp, backward curve tiger lilies are known for.
Next come the spots, dozens of them, drawn on by hand with a brown paint pen. Don't worry about making every spot the same. On a real tiger lily, they cluster toward the center and scatter out toward the tips, so a little variety looks more natural.
Afterward, we'll color the stamen wires with a marker. As a result, they take on a soft, peachy orange that ties them to the petals.
This project also does something a little different with the stem. Instead of leaving the wire bare, we'll wrap the wire in Shady Grove felt. Then we'll stitch it closed with a whip stitch, using DMC embroidery floss. If you're new to hand sewing, the whip stitch is one of the easiest stitches to learn, and it keeps the seam neat and snug. Sewing clips help hold the felt in place while you stitch. That way, your felt tiger lily looks cohesive from bloom to base.
Tiger lilies usually bloom in warm shades, from deep red to soft peach, though orange is the one most people picture. They're rich in meaning, too. Tiger lilies symbolize confidence and courage, and they've long been linked with wealth and prosperity.
A single felt tiger lily makes a bold statement in a bud vase. Because of its meaning, it's also a thoughtful gift for a friend starting something new. For a mixed-media look, pair it with our Cardstock Tiger Lily.
When your felt tiger lily is finished, share it in our crafters' community and on social using #MadeWithLia.
