Create Your Own Essential Oil Room Spray
Breathe Easy
As long as I can remember, I struggled with sensitivities to chemical fragrances. Walking down the cleaning aisle at the grocery store was a nightmare, and even a quick spritz of commercial room spray would trigger headaches and a stuffy nose. Yet, I have two cats and a new puppy, and with friends and guests visiting often, I knew I needed a solution to quickly freshen my home without harsh chemicals.

I love essential oils and the simplicity of making my own natural room and linen spray. I started experimenting with different blends, and the results were incredible! I'm excited to share my favorite room spray recipe with you. This mixture is the one I love, but remember, you can change the essential oils to your favorite scents and blends.
Homemade Room Spray Ingredients
- Distilled Water: 1 cup (This prevents bacterial growth. Tap water can introduce impurities.)
- Witch Hazel (alcohol-free): 2 tablespoons (Acts as an emulsifier, helping the essential oils blend with the water and has mild disinfectant properties.)
- Essential Oils: 40-60 drops total (Choose your favorite blend or single oils. See my favorite blend below.)
- Optional - Vegetable Glycerin: 1 teaspoon (Helps the scent linger longer and adds a slight moisturizing effect to linens.)
- Amber Glass Spray Bottles
My Favorite Essential Oil Blend (Floral Bloom):
- 24 drops Rose Geranium
- 16 drops Bergamot
- 12 drops Ylang Ylang
- 8 drops Grapefruit
Rose geranium and ylang-ylang create a beautiful floral bouquet, while bergamot adds a touch of brightness. Grapefruit's citrus helps keep the floral scent from becoming too heavy. This blend is perfect for bedrooms, bathrooms, or any space to add a fresh floral scent. This blend is very subtle and not overpowering, which is why I love it.
Instructions:
- Blend the Oils: Combine the witch hazel and your chosen essential oils in a small bowl. Stir gently.
- Fill the Bottle: Pour the distilled water into a dark glass spray bottle using a funnel.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the witch hazel and essential oil mixture to the bottle. If desired, add the vegetable glycerin.
- Shake Well: Secure the spray nozzle and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to combine.
- Spray & Enjoy: Lightly mist your rooms or linens from about 12 inches away. Shake before each use.
Tips for Your Room Spray:
- Dark Glass Bottles: Essential oils can degrade plastic, so opt for dark glass bottles.
- Test on Fabrics: If spraying on delicate fabrics, test on a hidden area first.
- Shake Before Use: Essential oils can separate, so shake well before each spray.
- Storage: Store your spray in a cool, dark place.
- Add a Pretty Label: Download and print the labels for this Floral Bloom Room Spray recipe onto full sheets of label paper and trim. If you want a custom label, try our newest pantry labels, which allow you to add detailed text.
I would love to hear about your favorite homemade potions you make for your home, so be sure to share these in the comments.

oooh I like this
I love this blend. My home smells so fresh and springy!
mix 100 ml distilled water with a few drops (maximum 10 drops) of essential oil i.e. lavender or peppermint (organic, top quality) and spray this on your arms or your face (eyes closed!). A wonderful refreshment on hot summer days

Oh wow! Then you have a lot of knowledge around these things. Wish we could meet up for coffee and talk about our passion for these things. 🙂 Maybe next time we are in Germany we can make it happen. I would love to meet you in person.
Whenever it is possible, yes please. I’m sure we will have good fun
