This project is great for all skill levels, and we've added a few tricks to make this craft even easier. Once you're ready to start your magical mushroom journey – meet us in the tutorial below!
The Amanita muscaria, or fly agaric mushroom, is one of the most recognized mushrooms in the world. Despite its ubiquitous appearance, this mushroom is also known for its toxicity, earning it a reputation as a "poisonous beauty." While our Crepe Paper Amanita Mushrooms are safe to handle and admire, they capture all the captivating allure of these iconic fungi without the risks!
To bring this project fully to life, you'll need our heavy crepe paper in shades of vanilla and ruby to beautifully capture the bold colors of the Amanita muscaria. The thick paper-covered stem wire will provide a sturdy base for your Crepe Paper Amanita Mushrooms, so they stand up nice and tall. And remember to use a curling tool to give your mushroom stems a natural, organic curve, just like the real ones that dot the forest floor.
The texture of honeycomb paper makes crafting the thin gills under the mushroom cap surprisingly simple. Additionally, three coatings of matte Mod Podge give the crepe mushrooms a glossy, lifelike appearance. Lastly, the delicate white spots, or warts, are made by carefully placing tiny bits of stretched crepe paper onto the cap, adding that final touch of realism.
Once you're finished, display your handmade mushrooms in a terrarium, use them as table décor, or include them in a fantastical fall centerpiece. If you like this project, check out our video for the Death Cap Mushroom for a little more fun with fungi.

Hi! I’m working through the instructions but I have a problem. The mushroom caps are too small to cover the honeycomb paper dome. I’ve the right crepe paper and I’ve stretched it to the limit but it still don’t fit! I manage to squeeze one in but then there is no hole for the mushroom stem to go into. Am I missing something? Thank you!
I am wondering, since this paper is handmade and each batch is a bit different, if you made your strips a bit longer to add more paper, that might fit the honeycomb better? You can still use the smaller caps and cut a smaller version of the honeycomb paper to fit. Let me know if that helps.
Thank you! I will try that 🙂
Hi, as we can’t get hold of the honeycombe paper here in the UK I am going to try and make some using stretched out vanilla crepe. Is it possible to count how many layers you have on the sheets so I can try and replicate it? Will be a challenge!
Oh goodness! We need to get the honeycomb to the UK. 😉
Try 20 layers first and see if that works. You can always add on. (This is a total guess, since it is a different paper weight).
We have not announced it yet, but we will be on HobbyMaker in the UK on November 7 and 8. 🙂
Whoo hoo, I have added these dates to my calendar, thanks Lia xxx
Yay! 🙂
Oh I do want to be able to get the honeycomb paper in the UK
Do you have stockists of your honeycomb paper in the UK? Thanks
We do not at this time. But we are in the process of finding the right fit. We will keep you posted. 🙂
I am so looking forward to making these Got all of my supplies.
Quick question. I’m just starting these and cutting the honeycomb. The tutorial says to cut 2 of each size. But the pattern pieces say cut 3. I hate to waste the honeycomb if I just need 2 of each. thanks.
Oh dear! I will fix the template. Cut 2. Thank you for pointing that out. 🙂
I can’t wait to make this mushroom! On a side note, I would love you to give us the templates for the gills in the SVG file, that way we could cut them out of heavy card stock with our cutting machine.
Have you tried using the honeycomb paper for the gills? One sheet will make dozens of mushrooms.
I do use the honeycomb paper, but can you cut it on the Cricut?
No, it is too thick. That is why I did not add it into the SVG.
Oh my goodness, sooo pretty! I’m loving this months collection! ❤️🍄🍁
Yay! I love to hear that. 🙂
These are beautiful! What are the sizes of your wooden rounds used for the arrangement? And, if you have a source, that would be great.
Mine are between 4-7 inches and we found these at Michaels a few years ago.
