Felt Woodland Pumpkin Masks
Pumpkin Pals: The Bumpy, Grumpy, and Fat Crew
This Halloween season, we are tricking our pumpkins by making them think they are a round black cat, a chubby horned owl, and a sly orange fox. These pumpkin masks are so simple to craft with just a few basic supplies and easy-to-follow instructions made from layered wool blend felt.
Meet the crew: the bumpy cat, grumpy owl, and fat fox! Each character has its own personality shaped by the pumpkin we chose. The fox sports a standard orange pumpkin, the owl perches on a pale pink squash-style pumpkin, and the cat claims a bumpy pale grey-green pumpkin as its own. And yes, we're counting cats as woodland animals for this project!

The secret to their spooky, grumpy expressions? Googly eyes tucked cleverly under their felt eyelids. These elements are essential for creating unique pumpkin masks that stand out during Halloween. This simple detail transforms ordinary pumpkins into characters with attitude and charm. The layered felt creates wonderful dimension and texture that makes each mask feel professionally crafted.
We started this project by designing cute patterns to be cut from layers of colored felt. You can download our patterns to decorate your pumpkins and create your own pumpkin masks, available in both an SVG file (recommended for cutting machines) and a PDF template for hand cutting. Plus, we've included a full photo tutorial that walks you through each step of assembly.
Once you gather all of your tools and materials, you can reduce or enlarge your pattern to fit your pumpkins. For our set here, we reduced the size of the fox to fit the smaller pumpkin with its mask. These adorable pumpkin buddies are perfect for your Halloween decor, whether displayed on your porch, mantel, or as a dining table centerpiece.
Share pictures of your pumpkin masks with us by tagging #MadeWithLia on Instagram or posting to our Facebook page for members. We can't wait to see your woodland pumpkin crew!

Leave a CommentLast time I tries cutting Felt on my Cricuit, I ended up with a mess 🙁
I now have your lovely wool felt for this project and don’t want to mess it up. What mat and settings do you recommend for cutting out these pieces?
Hi Sharon! Did you use a fine-point blade or a rotary blade? I am not sure why the Cricut felt setting has (or had at one point) a fine-point indicated for felt, because the rotary blade is a MUST. 🙂 We use the wool fabric setting. Also, we have a cut setting guide you can download: https://liagriffith.com/cricut-cutting-chart/
Thank you, LIA
Did you use a Fabric mat, or can I use a Medium grip mat? Also, I know you often cut some patterns by hand. Would you recommend that for this project? Or is using a Cricut a better option? ( I don’t cut fabric on my Cricuit very often. I do mostly Crepe Paper and Card stock or frosted paper.)
For felt, I like to use my older mats because the fiber seems to stick really well. Once you add the felt, it leaves a bit of fiber on the mat. I do not use the fabric mat very often (unless it is an older one). This is a great project for the cutting machine since there are not many smaller pieces. The rotary blade cuts beautifully. 🙂
Thank you. You always give such good advice 🙂
I can’t wait to make my Woodland Pumpkin Masks.
Thank you! We make the mistakes so you don’t have to. 😉
I love the creativity behind this! Decorating pumpkins as animals is such a great twist on a classic Halloween activity. My family and I had a lot of fun doing this!
Ciao Lia volevo avvisarti che questo tuo post sarà condiviso su https://www.facebook.com/kreattivablog spero ti faccia piacere ciao rosa

Thank you! I had so much fun making them:)
I am going to try this with cardstock paper! I have lots of fall colors. Thanks
Have fun and Happy Halloween!!
Hi Lia, aaaaaw these are sooooo cute, well done!!!!
thank you for the sharing and the free templates, have a fun nice halloween;-D
Thanks Jet! We are certainly having fun getting ready for it!
These are so super cute! We’re living in Hawaii this year and it’s beautiful and all that, but I’m really reluctant to carve a pumpkin when it’s so warm every day. I’ve been looking at no-carve options and so far your felt critters are my favorite by a mile! Pinning.
Thank you! Wish I could pop by Hawaii and decorate some pumpkins with you;-)
So so sweet!!! Love those.
Me too:) I get a silly grin every time I look at them, kind of make me wish I was 5 years old again;-)
Terribly beautiful!
But not too scary;-)
Awwwwhhh cuuuuute! Love these Lia! Halloween is not quite as big here in the UK as in the US, and sometimes I get into the spirit of Halloween, and sometimes not. But I think these little pumpkin costumes are cute enough to have a go at, and will stand apart from the usual pumpkin cut-outs we tend to see here. I also loved the Raven pattern you shared with us. Enjoy the silly season ahead 🙂
Hope you enjoy the Halloween season too:) With a few decorated pumpkins, please share your pictures with us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/liagriffith.hyl
