DIY Copper Plant Hangers
We fell in love with these air plants from Floracraft® recently and have been searching for ways to display them that reflect our crafty style. Our DIY copper plant hangers are the perfect solution. This was such a great DIY project to do because of the freedom you have to create whatever shape you want to and perfect for our Make It:Fun® challenge. We began with a length of 3mm copper tubing which we cut into a variety of lengths. There really are no rules here so embrace your creativity and know that you can’t really go wrong! We cut a total of 10 pieces for our small hanger with lengths ranging from 5.5cm – 11cm. Our larger copper plant hanger is made up of 14 pieces of copper pipe ranging in length from 8-15cm. To create the 3D shape with our copper tubing we threaded it with a matching copper wire, puling it together to form the 3D shape and tucking the remaining wire back into the tube. We suggest you play around and get your shape right before you trim the copper wire down!
Pop one or two faux air plants inside, then either sit them on a surface or hang them with clear wire from your ceiling. Either way, this is pretty much the coolest way to display your air plants and you can say “I made it” – which we think is one of the best feelings in the world! Enjoy! ~ Lia

I’m a little late to the party on this one, but I made a few of these and had a couple notes:
-I found this tubing at Ace Hardware, but have seen it at Hobby Lobby as well. I think it’s actually made for model trains or other modeling projects. It’s from the brand K&S. I can’t remember the size I got, but here’s a link to 3/32 in. brass tubing (copper is toxic to real air plants) from Ace Hardware (they also carry other sizes as well): https://www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/metal-sheets-and-rods/brass-tubes/5032610
K&S also makes a tube cutter for the small sizes, I think, as well as a miter box you could use with a miter saw to cut them.
– These can also be made from the small stir straws you get in cocktails or coffee. I made both metal (in brass and steel versions) and plastic versions of these hangers. I added small beads in the joints on the plastic ones to dress them up a bit. Just an idea, since these straws may be easier to get ahold of for some. You could even make them from the plastic straws and spray paint them gold or silver.
Thank you so much for this information Tiffany!!
I made some like this but used brass tubing. I purchased the tubing at Ace Hardware as well as the brass wire. It was pretty inexpensive. My air plant seems happy hanging in it.
Great idea!
beautiful idea!
Thanks! Happy crafting. 🙂
Someone mentioned that copper would kill plants overtime. What other metal or substance would you suggest>
Luckily we used faux airplants so we won’t have that problem! 🙂 You could try silver or gold tubing, but I’m not sure how that would affect the life of the plant. Let us know if you test it out!
Heads up being a grower of air plants and dealing with them for years. Copper is a slow killer of air plants it is just a metal that will kill them over time. If you can develop this without using copper it would be healthier for the air plants and people will have better success with their plants.
Thanks so much for this comment! We actually used fake air plants from FloraCraft for this post, but this is a great tip just in case people did not read that we used faux plants! Happy New Year to you 🙂
Hi Lia – I’m looking at the FloraCraft website for the faux air plants and they are not on there. (If they are, they are completely buried in the website and are really difficult to find.) Do you know if they were sold out or discontinued? Thanks!
I’m actually not sure about this! But I bet you could find faux air plants on another website somewhere 🙂 Good luck!
I found them on Amazon.
Did you use the wire cutters to cut the tubing or dos you need another tool? I couldn’t identify the little tool by the tubing.
I believe it’s just called a tube cutter. You can pick one up at your local hardware store!
Where is the best retail store to find the Floracraft air plants. Their website does not show this product but would love, love to find them!
Flora Craft told us that they are sold in stores at Walmart and online at Amazon (I just added the link)
These are so cool! Thank you!
Thanks Sharon!
May I ask where you got your copper tubing? I’ve had trouble finding it so small!
I got mine at the Hardware store.
