Dog’s Best Friend

After creating two DIY cat toy projects (our felt mouse and felt sushi), it was certainly time to make a DIY dog toy. Here is our no stuffing bunny dog toy that you can whip up in a snap with your sewing machine! You have the option to add stuffing and even a squeaker inside the bunny, but we decided to leave those out for a simple mess-free toy that would be easy to clean up if (or when) your dog decides to rip into it. As you can see, Enzo loved the toy and we hope your dog will too!

Tools

• Sewing Machine
• Scissors
• Sewing Pins
• Clear Tape
• Small Paintbrush

Materials

• 1/2 yard Minky Cuddle Fabric
• Wool/Wool Blend Felt (pink, black, white)
• Matching Thread
• White Craft Paint

Steps

1. Gather the tools and materials listed above.
2. Print the PDF pattern below and cut, taping the pieces together where marked.
3. Fold the fabric and pin the pattern through both layers. Cut the fabric according to the pattern. Then use the pattern to cut your felt pieces.
4. Position, pin and use a sewing machine to sew felt ear pieces on the front side of one layer of fabric.
5. Position, pin and sew the eyes and nose in the same way.
6. Match the right sides of the bunny together along the edges (so that the bunny face is pointing inward) and pin to secure.
7. Sew around all edges us a quarter-inch seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch opening along one side for turning the bunny right side out.
8. Turn the bunny right side out through the opening in the side, then tuck in the edges of the opening and pin to secure.
9. Sew opening shut with stitches close to the edge.
10. Paint a dot in the bunny’s eyes using white paint and the back of a small paintbrush.

Tips

We picked up our Minky at our local Fabric Depot, but the fabric is really accessible in general. Minky is great because it is pre-shrunk, so all you have to do is pick up the fabric and start crafting. This homemade dog toy is also a great introductory sewing project if you want to start teaching your kids how to use a sewing machine. When you are sewing around tight spaces like the eye and the nose, we recommend stitching very slowly. With these pieces we sometimes only did one or two stitches before slightly tweaking the positioning as we stitched around the felt. Other than that, this really is a simple project! After your dog starts playing with the toy, you can easily throw it in the washing machine if it ever gets too dirty.
