Become a MemberEver since we added a master seamstress to our team, our project possibilities have expanded exponentially. I love creating projects for new or soon-to-be parents because I know how wonderfully exhausting it can be to have a newborn. If you have a basic sewing machine, you will be able to make these adorable baby pants and matching hats right from the comfort of your own home! All you will need to make these baby pants and hat is soft fabric, fabric thread, and 3/4-inch elastic, which you should be able to find at your local fabric store.
To make our baby apparel, we used a super soft Minky material. You can find the exact patterns that we used for our pants on my Spoonflower page! Browse the pink polka dot pattern or the taupe striped pattern on their site. Of course, you can also order these patterns in fabrics other than Minky too. Buying 1 yard of fabric will be enough material to make two hats and one pair of pants. Below you will find 6 sewing pattern templates for three different pieces of baby apparel: the baby pants, the single-knotted hat, and the double-knotted hat. Each of these three pieces has a template sized for 0-3 months and one for 6-12 months. Print the PDFs according to which size you would like and use this to cut your fabric. Once your fabric is trimmed and ready, follow the step-by-step photo tutorial below to guide you through the sewing process. A serger is not necessary to make this project, but it will help to give a polished look after sewing the pants together.
These baby pants and hats would be great for new parents on a budget, or for friends and family to give as a beautiful handmade baby shower gift. My hope is that you will enjoy being able to make something special for the little ones in your life! Browse some of our other sewing projects on the site, or check out all the fabric designs we have on our Spoonflower page. Remember that these patterns can also be ordered as gift wraps or wallpapers through Spoonflower! I would love to see the creations that you come up with, so feel free to share your photos with me by emailing them in to hello@liagriffith.com or tagging your Instagram photos with #DIYDreamingWithLia. I will always share my favorites on Facebook! ~ Lia

I need to know how long the elastic needs to be in each size
We accidentally left out the detailed photo tutorial– it’s there now with info!
The pattern didn’t download for me. Was this only available for a limited time or is there a problem with the file?
They’re still available! I just tested the download and it worked for me. Maybe try a different web browser?
Where are the instructions? I just need to know how long the elastic should be for the pants. Thank you for the patterns, they’re adorable!
So sorry Dawn, they are there now to download!
I couldn’t find the photo tutorial.
Sorry Nancy, it’s there now! Thanks for letting us know it was missing.
I wish I could just buy this pattern for download! I’m not sure about a membership but I love the pattern and the fabric.
Most patterns on Etsy sell for $5+ each. On my site you will get this and all other patterns for $5 per month. You can cancel at anytime, if you want after the first month.
I love that you are posting sewing projects! Can you put up some toddler clothes projects? I have this fantasy of making clothes for my 2-year old and I feel like I kinda need to be walked through the process. 🙂
I will add it to our list of projects to brainstorm 😉
Very, very cute!
Thank you! 🙂
So incredibly cute. And I love minky! Thanks so much!
Thanks Lisa! I love the prints that Krista designed here.
