Felt and Pine Cone Owl Ornaments
This Project is a Hoot!
Time for another kid’s craft! A couple weeks ago we shared our felt and pine cone turkeys with googly eyes. And today we bring you our pine cone owl ornaments. Though we’re making these as holiday tree ornaments, they’re a hoot to craft any time of the year.

These cute little pine cone owl ornaments come with three different personalities. You can mix and match our patterns to make your own unique little characters. Take a look at our short video tutorial here to learn how to make your own felt and pine cone owls.
Felt is such a great material for kids’ crafts. If you haven’t yet tried a high-quality wool blend felt, you need to treat yourself and buy some! A wool blend is so soft, easy to cut, and looks great in finished projects.
We have a good handful of felt crafts coming for Christmas and the winter holidays, so I highly recommend you order a selection of your favorite colors from Benzie Design on Etsy today! For these pine cone owl ornaments, we used a combination of soft blue-greens, greys, white, and a heather brown. Once you’ve crafted these cuties, you can easily add a ribbon or a string on the heads of your owls to hang them from tree branches.
How to Make a Felt and Pine Cone Owl Ornament
- Gather your tools and materials. Then download our owl pattern at the end of this post.
- Trim pieces of felt according to the pattern. Or use the pre-colored pieces to make these owls out of paper instead.
- Glue together your pieces of felt to create the owl face and wings.
- Then, glue the owl’s face and wings onto the pine cone.

Pine cone & felt Owls – I downloaded the pattern but I see No Material list & No written Instructions, did I miss it? What size pine cones did you use?
Hi Esther, this is an older post before we started adding the extra download page for materials and instructions. The pinecones I used were about 3.5″ tall.
Thank you
Hi,
I have pinecones that are 3″ tall. Do I need to make adjustments to the size of the felt pieces?
Thanks,
Linda
Our pinecones were between 3-3.5″, so the pattern should be fine as-is. You can certainly adjust the size if you feel that they look too big!
I am trying to get on the email list. When I try to type In my email it comes up all caps.. I tried several times and no luck.
Hi Corinne! The email sign up isn’t case sensitive so either way you should be able to sign up 🙂
Would you happen to have a video of making the owl pine cone craft?
Sorry Diane, we only have a photo tutorial for this one 🙂
what type of sheet do you used in owl’s wings and eyes
It’s all felt 🙂
These people stole your picture, cut off the source and pasted their own facebook page over the picture: https://www.facebook.com/joost.franken.9/photos/pcb.593722770782468/593722187449193/?type=3&theater

Thanks for letting us know. We could never keep our eyes on all this. 😉

Thank you so much for including me on your list Kathy!! Happy New Year 🙂
Any advice for cutting out the tiny circles for the pupils and the dots on the wings? I can’t seem to hold the felt to cut the circle once the circle gets that small!
Maybe you should enlist the help of a little assistant 🙂 Any little ones in the house with a steady hand and sharp eyes?

Espero que esto ayuda! Dime si tienes mas preguntas 🙂
I had added this comment/question to a post above from October 22. I am reposting the question here in hopes of some feedback or a reply from Lia or her staff. Thank you
Can you help with additional information on the feet? What is the length each of the three pieces of pipe cleaner were cut? Is there a better picture showing how they are twisted together? Thank you!
Hi Alma, sorry we read all emails and comments that we receive. However sometimes it takes us a day or two to dig through them:-) We made about 1″ u-shape and then a shorter piece that we put in the middle of the U-shape by twisting the pipe cleaner around. Please note that the size of the feet really depends on the size of pine cone you use. Happy crafting!!
Thank you! Happy weekend! Happy crafting!
I really would like to make these owls with my grand children this weekend. Can you help me out so that I can print off the instructions. I guess I am just lucky enough to have a facebook page.
Hello Gail, you can find the download at the bottom of the page. To print the tutorial you can double click on the image and then just print the image. Happy crafting!
Hi, It still will not download for me. Is is because Im not a member? I just want this craft for the grand kids you see.
Hi Gail. Most of our premium patterns, printables and cutting machine files are part of the memebership program of $5 a month. We would love to have you join us or you can buy it in our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/252050814/template-for-felt-and-pinecone-owl?ref=shop_home_active_6
Can you help with additional information on the feet? What is the length each of the three pieces of pipe cleaner were cut? Is there a better picture showing how they are twisted together? Thank you!
The two pieces for each foot is about 1 inch then 3/4 inch for the middle one. You can see on step 5 of the tutorial were we bent the longer piece and added the middle toe between. Once glued onto the base they tend to stay put easily.
I am looking for 2015 printable calander
It is right here:-)
How do you find this material this looks cute
I actually picked the pine cones but in the Fall they usually sell them at craft supply stores.
These are right up my alley. Love them.
Thank you:-)
Wonderful, hat a website it is!This weblog provides helpful information too us, keep it up.
thank you:-)
It’s actually a cool and helpful piece of info. I’m satisfied that you shared this helpful information with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.|
🙂
How do you hang them? Do you have a photo of them hanging? They’re very cute!
We actually just tucked them into our tree but you could easily glue a loop of string on the back of the head.
Where do you get the decals from/ in step 1? ( on the page under the pin cones)
It is the printable pattern to use as a guide when you cut the felt.
Very cute!!!
Thank you, these were a favorite of ours!
I think it’s easy tutorial. I’ll make it today. Thanks.
xoxo

I live in beautiful Lake Tahoe and have abundance of pine cones in my back yard.
Bless day !!

These are adorable. Just found you through a link on FB. Have you cut felt in your Cricut? I am excited to try it as I love working with felt but am spoiled with my Cricut having always done my cutting for me when working with paper!
Yes, you can cut felt, but I have yet to master it. The girls in the design department at Cricut do amazing things with felt.
Such awesome ideas!!!!!! Just wondering how tall the pine cones are that you used?
They were 3-4 inches.
I cannot get the download or the templet??? Is there any other way I can get it?
Try using another internet browser.
Thank you Lia, we made one pinecone owl for our christmas decoration this year and it turned out great!

Thank you for this template…I am looking for these all the time to make with my grands.
How fun!
Hope to make the owls & “noddy” with my grandchildren over Christmas, when we have collected the cones on our walks.
I’m new to all this Ted. Stuff!!
That sounds lovely, hope you and your grandchildren have a lovely holiday. Have you seen the pinecone elves? https://liagriffith.com/kids-craft-felt-and-pine-cone-elves/
THANK YOU LIA, for this adorable project & the templates. We have a back yard full of evergreens so pine cones aplenty !! Best of the season to you.
I wish I had a backyard full of pine cons, jealous;-) I am doing a lot of pine cone projects. Have you seen the elves? https://liagriffith.com/kids-craft-felt-and-pine-cone-elves/
Ok so this is probably a really silly question, but I print the template out on just regular printer paper then use them as like a stencil for the felt correct?
Yes you got it;-) Have fun!
These are so cute! I showed them to my daughter and we are going to make them as a craft at her 10th “Owl” theme birthday party. Perfect since we have a backyard full of pinecones and it is almost Christmas. What a great take away for each girl. I’ll be sure to get a picture of all their creations to share.
How perfect! I cannot wait to see the Pictures. Happy Birthday to your daughter!
Just made these with my kiddos. My 9yo and I had a great time. I heard, “This is SO much fun” at least 15 times. I did most of the cutting and she did most of the gluing with tacky glue. I even let her use the hot glue gun for the first time when we added the pieces to the pinecones. I think I’m raising a little crafter! The 6yo and 4yo showed us which designs they liked and the colors they wanted and then they were off to play.
Tacky glue is perfect for the kids! I even use only low temp hot glue. 😉 Share photos of their little creations so we can share on Facebook too. You can send them to hello at lia griffith dot com.
These are so adorable. I can’t wait to have my grandkids make them on our Bake, Make and Decorate weekend. Thanks so much for sharing.
They will love them! 😉
Superbe . Merci !!!
Awe, thank you!

I love working with felt! These are so adorable. Might just have to whip some up to hang from the tree or decorate with. Theresa @DearCreatives
Yay! Cannot wait to see them:)
I love your ideas. Thank you for sharing.
You are welcome:)
Yes thank you I wild do that! I am glad to read that people likes pinecones, I thought that me and my Mom were the only ones picking them up and storing them after christmas hahah
You sound like my people:) Now you know what to do with all those pinecones.
These are sooooo cute! Pine cones get me every time, and with the felt, they are just adorable!
Awe… that warms my heart! I know what you mean, pinecons get me every time too;-)
I’m sooo……happy to have found your site!! cutest ideas and tutorials!! Can’t wait to make these pine cone owls. Have to wait for snow to melt to collect them from my backyard.
I am happy you found me too;-) Hope the snow melts soon!!
They are adorable!! I don’t know if my 3 year old will be patient and gentle when making them even if we used a different kind of glue so I don’t have any burns. I don’t know maybe I’ll wait one more year for this one 🙂
I would recommend using Elmers glue, even I get burned every now and then using the hot glue:)
