felt and pom pom stocking gift bags

Pa-Rum Pom Pom Pom

I wanted to keep these felt stocking gift bags on the simple side so it would be easy to make a bunch of them. There’s no embroidery involved and no complex sewing techniques — just a straightforward pattern plus adding a playful pom pom trim.

I used a white felt fabric that is washable so these stockings can be reused for gifting or to hang in a child’s room for the holidays. What I loved about this fabric and the pom pom bundle is, after making a handful of stocking for gifts, I had enough material and trim to make a simple tree skirt as well. I’ll bet you can find even more ways to decorate with the snowy white scraps and string of mini white snowballs!

You can follow the step-by-step instructions below to make your felt stocking gift bags. I used my pinking shears for the edges of the felt to add interesting detail, but this is optional. Another stitching option if you do not have a sewing machine is to sew the two layers together with embroidery floss using a blanket stitch. There are so many ways to personalize these multi-use stockings, including the monogram letter gift tags that you can download as an SVG for your cutting machine or a PDF and print onto colored paper for hand cutting.

How to Make Felt Stocking Gift Bags

  1. Gather your craft tools and materials from the list above. Then download our template below.
  2. Cut two layers for each stocking of felt as shown on template.
  3. Cut pom pom trim the width of stocking top: 1 for each layer, 2 for each stocking. Then, cut and tie cord for loops, one per stocking.
  4. Clip and sew pom pom trim on inside layers of both stocking layers.
