- Gather the tools and materials necessary, then pre-wash your linen.
- To cut a straight line through the linen, locate a thread on the edge and pull it out of the fabric.
- Use the gap left by pulling out the thread as a cutting path through the linen. Repeat this process to cut four 20 x 20″ napkins.
- Unravel all four edges of each napkin by about a 1/2 inch.
- Iron napkin, spread out on covered work surface, and mix containers of diluted paint.
- Using a fan brush, gently brush varying paint colors in an upward motion.
- Continue brushing paint onto your linens. Dilute the paint a bit more for more watery dyed areas.
- Cover your napkin with layers of irregular stripes and allow to dry before setting fabric paint with an iron.
Tips
You should be able to find a good selection of fabric paint at your local art supply store. We specifically used Pebeo Setacolor brand of transparent fabric paint in Emerald Green, Turquoise and Moss Green. In step 4, we give instructions on how to make a frayed edge to your napkins, but this is optional depending on the look you are going for. To create more of a watercolor or tie dye appearance, you will want to generously dilute your paint – we made approximately a 50/50 mixture. Feel free to test out your brush strokes and paint mixtures on a scrap piece of fabric before painting on your linen. It might be fun to play around with different patterns and techniques! What can I substitute for fabric paint? I am a teacher and fabric paint is expensive in large amounts.
Hi Carmen,
You can use normal acrylic paint mixed with a fabric medium to make inexpensive fabric paint! We we recommend this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007C7XI0S/?tag=canastrecraf-20
Hi Lia,
Beautiful cloths! Did you just dilute your fabric paint with water? Also how long did you wait before setting your paint with an iron?
Thank you! Yes, dilute with water. I waited 4-5 hours until the paint was fully dry before ironing.
Hi Lia! Just found your site today…it’s wonderful!!! I love this tutorial! Just curious though about the yardage required. How can you get 4 20×20 napkins out of only 1 yard of fabric? Seems you would need a little more because 1 yard is only 36 inches and 2 x 20 is 40 inches. thanks!
Ack! Thank you, we meant 1.25 yards 🙂
Your napkins are beautiful! When we moved in our home the previous owner left two matching chairs. The upholstery doesn’t go with the way I designed the room. They’re beautiful chairs but I can’t afford to have them reupholstered. I’ve reupholstered things before but these chairs having piping everywhere, in some spots double piping and it’s also got buttons and pleats in the back. I’ve been wanting to find a fabric paint and you just showed me the way! Thank you Lia! My chairs will finally go with the room.
That’s so great to hear!!
I can’t wait to try this . I don’t care for paper napkins , so now I can use linen everyday !!! Thank You Lia Griffith !!!!
Yay! You’re so welcome 🙂
