Become a MemberThis project has been one of those DIY projects that has had the entire team “oooohing” and “aaahing” over it. Our DIY baby mobile is the perfect handmade addition to a baby’s room and is one of those pieces you just know will be treasured forever. Because this could easily become a keepsake, we would recommend using a good quality wool felt. Made using gorgeous felts from our friends at Felt on the Fly, our hot air balloon baby mobile is as soft as clouds and comes in a mix of pale yellows, teal, grey and coral. Sitting in the basket of each hot air balloon is a teeny tiny animal character making this the cutest baby mobile around for miles!
To make this DIY baby mobile simply download the pattern below to your computer. Cut out the pattern onto good quality felts then follow the simple instructions below. You will also need embroidery threads for stitching, an embroidery needle, fabric scissors, string and a circular wooden embroidery hoop.. If you are looking for more cute DIY baby projects take a peek at our printable baby shower invitations and matching hot air balloon gift wrap. Check back later this week for our baby shower cake toppers and watercolor baby shower invitations. Enjoy! ~ Lia

Could you please tell me how many strands of floss you use when top or blanket stitching etc.?
Hi! When we designed this project a few years ago, we used the full strand of floss. Now that our techniques have improved over time, we would likely remake this with only 2-3 strands for each, to make it less bulky.
Beautiful! When you attach the balloons/clouds, you mentioned sewing up through the felt at the top of the balloon and then up through the cloud. Do you anchor with a knot at the top of the balloon? What holds it on to the thread so it doesn’t slide off? Also, do you use a particular knot for tying everything to the embroidery hoop? I don’t like the visual of “tails” hanging off where it is attached but have no idea what to do to make it cleaner. Thank you!
Hi Sarah! Yes, I would use a knot at the base of the clouds so that they don’t slide down. To hide the knots and tails at the top, tie it so the knot is on the inside of the hoop, and pass the tail around the wrapped around twine, then trim it close.
The Etsy kit is sold out, so I don’t know what all to buy to make this. Is there a craft list with felt sizes available? The Etsy links just go to felt colors, not sizes or other necessary items.
Renee
Hi Renee,
You will need one sheet of 6×18 felt in each color listed in the links just below the photo tutorial in the post.
Is there a way to purchase this hot air balloon pattern without having to become a member? I don’t need the clouds or animals. Just the balloon. thanks! 🙂
Hi Brianna,
We do not have an option to pay per download, however you can sign up for a monthly membership and have access to all of our downloads until you choose to cancel. 🙂
Hi! A few years ago I purchased this adorable baby mobile kit (hot air balloons with animals, through Etsy for my first grandchild. Now another baby is on the way, and I’m looking for something similar to make for the baby (a little girl). Can you recommend a kit? I’d really love to make something that is as charming as the first one. Thank you so much!

How sweet! We don’t sell kits but you could certainly make one using this pattern 😉
I purchased the $9.99 monthly membership but still cant download this print. It already came out of my bank account but its telling me to pay for a membership, which I just did?
Can someone contact me please.
Hi Julia, can you send an email to hello@liagriffith.com with our login email address so we can look into this for you?
Hi,
Can this pattern be downloaded to a phone? Our printer hooks up to our phones
Yes depending on your phone, you should be able to save the PDF and print from there.
Such a great project! Just finished making it, made it with a 12 inch hoop and 8 balloons using high contrast colors. Turned out so cute. So happy I found this pattern.
Oh love it!
Now it worked – could download the PDF. THANKS for this lovely project!
So glad it worked for you 🙂
This mobile is lovely! Unfortunately the first download link is broken. Only the svg files are downloadable. Could you please fix the first link?
What type of thread/string do you use to attach the balloons to the hoop?
We used white baker’s twine, but the floss would work just fine, too!
Can you make this into an SVG file for the Cricut and post?
I am a member
Yes, we just created those files– now available to download 🙂
Before I buy the pattern how high are the balloons in the hot air mobile. I need to make one for my new grandbaby but my daughter in law doesn’t want the balloons too big
The balloons alone are 3.75″ high. You can always print the pattern at a reduced size if you think they’re too big 🙂
could I bring your idea to make things like this for sell in my country ?
Thanks for asking, however our designs are for personal use only.
I’ve almost finished making this (and love it!) but I’m confused about how to stitch it all together- how do you attach the balloons to the clouds? I get that you can just see straight through the cloud, but how do you attach the balloon below? Help please! I feel like I’m missing something obvious!!
The end of the strings can either be sewn through the edge and tied onto the hot air balloon, or add a dot of glue to secure it inside. From there you just string it straight through the cloud and tie onto the embroidery hoop.
Is the top stitch the same as the running stitch? Is there a preferred stitch to use? Thanks!
Yes! It is just a running stitch going through all the layers of felt before blanket stitching the entire balloon together.
Love this tutorial! Do you have any suggestions for what you could use instead of an embroidery hoop – I am finding it hard to get hold of one? 🙂
We got ours at Michael’s (linked at the bottom of the post). Have you tried Amazon? Our mobile used an 8″ hoop like this one. You could also bind a couple of short dowels together in an X and hang the balloons from there, or even some nice sticks. Hope that helps!
I just received my kit and I can wait to start sewing everything together! The instructions say to cut out two of the animal bodies; are they just glued together for stability? Thanks!
Yes they are glued together, though you could sew them as well!
I’m sewing it right now, it is so beautiful. And my nephew is just born yesterday (a bit earlier than expected, auntie is late now :-P).
How do you sew the animals ? And especially the small panda and cat’s ears ? Thanks.
Aww congrats auntie! We actually glued those small pieces on, they’re just too small for my fingers to sew 🙂
I am in the process of making the Hot Air Balloon Mobile and I have a few questions before I put it together. How long do you make the brown braided floss that gets attached to the basket an balloon can you give me a length size? What type of string do you recommend to use to fasten to the balloons, clouds and Hoop and what length did you use? Last question what size Hoop should I purchase since they come in several sizes?
Thank you Justine
Hi Justine! I think the brown braided floss was about 2″. I used white embroidery floss for the rest, and I don’t remember exact lengths so just make it as long/short as you want! We used a 9″ hoop.
Hi Lia,
Do you think this would work making it out of paper or cardstock? Having a hot air balloon themed baby shower, and am having difficulty finding a template to make out of paper.
Thank you for all your inspirations.
Nancy
I think cardstock would work! It would be cute as a garland as well as a mobile 🙂
Lia,
Love this mobile!! I’m debating on how to attach the balloons and clouds to the string. What do you suggest?
Thanks!
I sew right through the felt, starting with the top center of the balloon, then up through the cloud. 🙂
I ordered the felt pack from Etsy- Felt on the Fly ! Making for baby shower gift. Almost all mobiles are meant for movement and babies will track movement with their eyes. Babies don’t usually care about the art work :))… It’s going to be a wonderful shower gift. NI want to say how super thrilled I am finding your patterns!
I’m so glad you found this project, and our site! Please send a photo of the finished product, we love seeing our readers’ creations 🙂
Hi Lia
How much felt is required in each colour in order to make this lovely hot balloons?
We were able to make this with just one sheet of each color.
I love it!! Igual will try to make it ? thanks! ???
You can do it!! Enjoy 🙂
Lia
I am in love with this.
No wonder your whole team was gushing over it.
Now . . . . who do I know who is having a baby?!?
<3
Pia
🙂
I think the mobile is beautiful!
But I do also wonder who it has been made for. If made for us grown-ups who views it horizontally, it makes sense. But if for the baby child who views it from below, it makes no sense.
What would make a good mobile to be viewed from the child’s point of view, and still lovely to look at for the rest of us?
/Bella
Great point. You could use it to decorate an older child’s room. We had heard that too much stimulants isn’t good, then the baby won’t go to sleep:-) Can’t win right:-)
Thanks..so pretty
Enjoy:-)
Lia, you and your team are amazing!! I wish I could send you and your team a bouquet of flowers.
You know I can use al the baby shower crafts ……
I have time enough to make it …. till the end of january.
🙂
