Become a MemberI often miss having a little girl to dress up and plan princess parties for, but now my daughter and I are onto “grown up” creative adventures. Emily, who is about to turn 21, will be finishing her cosmetology training soon (yesterday she gave me the best haircut I have ever had) and I am helping her design and style her first home. Though she loves my vintage, rustic style, her taste goes more towards a fresh and modern look, so we started scouring the stores for affordable and well designed pieces. We hit the mother lode with Target, and found this great Room Essentials collection of upscale and well priced pieces in this gorgeous teal and yellow theme. To give you a sneak peek of her new house, here is a cozy little reading nook we put together with modern furniture, lamps and accessories, my favorite being the Scandinavian print pillow. LOVE!
Here are a few pieces we chose:
WIRE BASKETS // These vintage style baskets come in several colors including chrome. We chose the bright yellow for an added pop of color. These are so versatile and will be used for many things in the upcoming years.
COLORFUL PILLOWS // I am personally in love with the grey and yellow color mix right now and have it in my own living room. To make Emily feel right at home, we chose these fun pillow in the triangle graphic print, grey and yellow embroidered pillow and the Scandinavian style multi floral print pillow.
TRIPOD TABLE LAMP // I just love the mix of grey and dark teal with the grey linen lamp shade. So handsome! They even added the dark teal to the cord.
CIRCLES AREA RUG // Living here in Portland we are careful to make our spaces as bright as possible to get us through the rainy winter months. This pretty yellow rug is the perfect foundation for a room all year round.
TEAL OTTOMAN // When you live in a small space and have limited furniture, it is good to have a piece that can be used for multiple purposes. This stool makes a great foot rest, extra chair, coffee table and of course a perch for the dog.

Could you please list a source for the fox displayed in these photos?
It’s a cookie jar from Target, the Threshold brand– but sadly is no longer available on their site.
WHAAAAT?!?! You have a 20+ year old daughter? Lady, I thought you were in your twenties YOURSELF! So fun!!!
You just made my day! Thank you:)
Hola Lia,
With your help your daughter will be very lucky because I don’t doubt that you will make a beautiful house with your good taste.
I’m sorry ….my bad english i don’t know more……..bbbrrr
Kisses .
Hola and Thank you!
It’s so fun to work with grown up daughters! I spent last week with my 22 y/o daughter in Virginia painting a rocking chair and putting together a pallet deck island. I would have never guessed you had a DD that old – you certainly don’t look it!
Hi Val! Sometimes even I forget that I have a daughter that old:-) How fun that you got to spend some time helping your daughter decorate!
The decorating is wonderful, but am impressed by the superb portrait of Emily.
Why thank you . . . dad. 😉
The up-lit effect on the branch is stunning!
Thanks Melinda!
Awe ! Love that it is for your daughter! Special 🙂 Fantastic choices as well! I am addicted to drum shades, Target here I come.
I LOVE drum shades. In fact that is all I have right now. haha. She is adorbs. 😉
What about the rest of her house?! I would love to see!
I will have to share when we finish!
Stunning room. X
Thanks Tanya!
Strange as it may sound, I love the white branch, which looks like it may be a wall hanging?? Would love to know where you found that!
It is not strange because it is quite cool! I did hang it on the wall. I bought it at a flower shop, it is a manzanita branch. I then spray painted it white.
Love it, so fun and fresh! (So I’m guessing either you transformed a corner of your living room, or Emily lives in a house that looks exactly like yours!) I was at Target today and gushing over all their pillows and their great dhurrie rug-style poufs! Oh, how I love when all the Fall home goods start trickling in. 🙂
We staged it at my house since I have better light, but it is all going to her house. ;-). I know! I am LOVING some of the amazing pieces they have right now.
This is gorgeous! Do you do house calls to Australia???
Love your blog x
Ruth
I would love to! 😉
Love the branch on the wall. How do you hang something like that? cdahlgren at live dot com
I tied a sheer thin ribbon onto the branches and hung it on a white nail. You can see it but have to look close.
Love the colors you’ve used here! Who could ever have a bad day waking up to or coming home to this?!
Thanks Judy! My favorite color combo.
the first thing that caught my eye is that branch…tell me about it. I took my cosmetology training in high school. It served me well for many years and still does on occasion 🙂
It is a manzanita branch that I painted white. Love it. She is very talented with hair and enjoys it.
I love your daughter’s room! Personally I am addicted to Target, love their new Home collections.
Thanks Anna! 😉
