Upcycled Grocery Bag Easter Basket
Here is an updated version of those homemade easter baskets using a twine-handled bag I snagged at Target. I try to bring my own bags, but when I see a potential craft project in the checkout line, I can’t resist. The twine handle is then twisted together to make the adorable basket handle. You can make the handle as tall or short as you like, and I used the whole handle on my basket. It’s so adorable for Easter treats or to hold some tasty macarons for an afternoon tea with a friend. Making homemade Easter baskets is also an excellent project for an afternoon activity with the kids.
Here is the extra good news! After making a half dozen of these little cuties, a light bulb went off in my head on how to make it easier to wrangle the weaving process. I added this idea to my new tutorial below. Remember, you can make your baskets larger by increasing the width of your strips. FYI, this basket is on my “Handcraft Your Life Video Series” list. Wouldn’t it be a great video tutorial? Check back in tomorrow and see how you can help make that happen! ~ Lia

Nice Idea. Thanks for sharing it………….:) 🙂
SO cute! Thanks, Lia and Happy Easter! 🙂
You are so welcome!
Just tried this craft with my teenage daughter last night. I admit it was a little tough. Some of the steps were a little difficult to follow. In the end, we stuck it out and it is very cute. May attempt to try another one today so I can perfect the skill. Thanks!
Hope you have fun!
WOW LOVE IT . VERY LOVELY BASKET.. BEAUTIFUL.
THANKS FOR THE INSTRUCTION.
Happy you like it. It is one of my favorites.

Lovvvvveeeeeedddd the idea!
Time consuming no doubt, but would definitely make for a pretty prop for food photography!
Thanks for sharing 🙂
Thanks. I use mine for props and to hold some makeup goodies in my bathroom. 🙂

A very sweet version that anyone can make. 🙂
Hey Lia congrats on the move! Everything looks lovely of course.
I am adoring this project and the upcycling of paper bags. I’d love to give out little baskets to friends this year, but haven’t wanted to buy little baskets that might just end up in a landfill. Making my own with the stacks of paper bags I have in my closet is such a great idea!
Thanks Megan. It is a lot of fun to have my own space. 😉
Do it! What a sweet idea. Would love to see photos of your finished baskets if you do.
Congratulations! I love your work and already made the move with you!
Welcome Margaret!
Congratulations on your new blog!! I just love the look of the basket. Unfortunately our grocery stores stopped packing in brown paper bags years ago – they had switched to plastic – but now you have to have your own or pay 5 cents a plastic bag!!! However, I do have a roll of Kraft wrapping paper from the dollar store which I will probably use to try this out! Thanks for the inspiration and idea
Yes! The craft paper works great. I stock up on Dollar Store Kraft mailer paper of all kinds of things. You could even make your handle by wrapping or braiding garden twine.
Congratulations on your new blog, which looks absolutely stunning! Of course, as soon as I read the post today that you were moving, I popped in to subscribe right away. So looking forward to all of the beautiful things you will share and have a great weekend!
Awww, Thanks Cindy! So happy to see you here.
What a fabulous idea! I can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much for the great instructions and beautiful pictures.
You are so welcome Kitty. 🙂
Congratualtions Lia! I can’t wait to see what amazing ideas you have in store for us. I’m sure you will rock this blog!
Thanks Pam! That is my plan. 😉
The paper basket is so pretty with the green ribbon and using a piece of paper to keep the stripes in place is brilliant. Thank you for always sharing these beautiful wraps, Lia! 😀
P.S. Liking your new blog very much (I have this ridiculous penchant for green things)
Thanks for the sweet note Onel! So happy you like it. 😀
I knew there was a reason I was hoarding Whole Foods paper sacks! Thanks for posting this great tutorial!
Yes! And now that I figured out that brace trick, they are that much easier.
