We are in the process of designing a brand new bedroom for Anna's boys. We were offered the opportunity to re-style a children's bedroom with products from online home decor store, Hayneedle, and have had a blast designing a camping-themed room for Anna's little adventurers. The big reveal will come later this month but we couldn't keep this felt fishing game to ourselves any longer and just had to share it with you. What better pastime to indulge in, when you are on a camping trip, than a little fishing? For our kids' version we used a wicker basket to act as our mini fishing hole and made a selection of fish from gorgeous wool felt, ready to be caught by our mini fishermen. In beautiful tones of gray, aquamarine, rust and coral, these felt fish are not only fun to look at but also soft to the touch.
Once you have cut out the templates, the fish are easily constructed by hand-sewing a blanket stitch around the edges and attaching the fins with hot glue. You can find our full tutorial below. Don't forget to insert a magnet in the fish prior to stuffing it. Download and print our fish patterns using the button at the end of the post. Our next post will feature a tutorial for the detailed fishing rods, which will not only be part of the game but also be added to the decor of the new room. Enjoy! ~ Lia

Leave a CommentWhat size magnet do you recommend? The link to the magnet in the prior message doesn’t seem to work.
Thanks
Amber
I just updated the materials list. You can use anything from a 15mm-20mm, or even larger, as long as it fits inside the felt fish head. The larger magnets will be easier for younger children.
Hello! Where can i obtain this fishing game?
This is a DIY project. We have the templates and tutorial here in this post.
Loving making this project. Thanks for the beautiful design. Couple of suggestions:
You could add an additional two side fins to the SVG because when you cut out the felt on a machine, you donβt realise you need two fins, one for each side.
I have struggled to make my painted scales look good. I have been using outdoor acrylics but do you have any better suggestions?
Thanks for pointing that out! I had Emily update that post and add a template for the pattern on the fish. You can cut them from a heat transfer vinyl or just use a pencil to trace and fill in with the paint. Let me know if that works. π
Can you guys provide an SVG file please?
We just uploaded an SVG file π
I bought some magnets for this project but they don’t seem strong enough to hold with the weight of the fish. What kind of magnets did you use? Any tips?
We used these heavy duty magnets: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DWV5U1M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. They’re the best!
thanks! π
I love your color choices! Could you let me know what colors you used from Benzie Design for the project?
The colors we used were: peppercorn, rainstorm, graphite, smoke, silver, brick, blush, grapefruit, and cantaloupe.
What a clever idea thank you for sharing
So glad you like it! π
