This beginner-friendly felt-craft project transforms a classic campfire into something fun, whimsical, and just right for hours of imaginative play. Hand-sewn layers of felt flames create a fun opportunity to practice stitching with kiddos. If you're also in need of a refresher, be sure to take a peek at our Embroidery Basics skills course. Cute! Great idea.
I just discovered this project while getting ready to host my niece this summer. We typically meet in upstate NY and have a real campfire and s’mores, but this year, she’s coming to my suburban home in FL, so it’s a faux campfire for us!
When cutting this project on my Cricut, I found the log ends at 2.25″ diameter were too small to blanket stitch to my logs. The math works out, but things didn’t quite work in real life. I found that increasing the diameter to 2.5″ was just enough to blanket stitch onto the logs without too much extra on either side.

I have a suggestion…. not sure if its totally no doable but when you have large patterns like this you should expect that most people aren’t able to print something out thats 11×17. Ive bought clothes patterns online and simply had to tape them together then cut them out. Was super excited about this pattern, I was going to make a Calcifer fire (from howls moving castle)

If you print out the template provided you can estimate the amount of fabric needed, we purchase our felt in 12×18 sheets and would recommend 3 sheets each of Marigold, Tangerine, and Latte, and 2 sheets each of Yellow and Toast.

Hi I love this pattern and making this for my sons birthday along with the smores set. Can you tell me if you split the embroidery floss into 3 pieces or used the whole strand(6 threads)? Might be an odd question but I’m unsure how thick the details on the logs/flames and blanket stitch should be. Thanks!

Quick question, so if it is printed on normal printer paper (letter size) it is not the right measurements?
You will need to print 11×17 to get the right size.

Unfortunately we don’t have an SVG for this. You just have to cut out each item once in paper! Once you have the paper template for each shape, you can then cut out felt using that 🙂

Hi Michelle, I’m sorry about the confusion! There is no official materials list for this craft. All you will need is felt, polyester fiberfill, and a needle and thread. You can decide which colors you would like to use! Just some different color oranges or yellows for the fire, and browns for the logs. Same for the thread. Best of luck!! -Lia 🙂

Thank you. We used Tangerine, Lemonade and Ecru for the flames. For the logs we used Latte and Toast. Have fun!
can you tell me how many 12X18 felt sheets you used for each item?
For the flames, you will need 2 for the orange, 2 for the lighter orange, and probably just 1 for the inner part. The logs you will need 1 sheet of the darker brown per each one. Every other piece is less than one sheet, but you’ll want more depending on how many you want to make. Hope that helps!
whoops! somehow I skipped over where you mentioned it was wool felt, but caught it at my last glance! haha but I would still love to know the approx. yardage!
For the flames around 6 pieces of each color. Each piece was 12×16″ . If you don’t want to use all the layers you could look at the pattern and see what to eliminate.

We usually get felt from Benzie Design.
I love these!!!! When I print the template it appears smaller than your finished product looks in the picture; do I need to enlarge the templates to be the right size?
The fire itself should be printed on a 11×17″ size paper. (maybe take it to a FedEx Kinkos and print it there) Hope it turns out, these boys sure loves it!
