DIY Felt Reindeer
Felt is one of our favorite cozy crafting materials for wintertime, so it is a natural fit for also making Christmas projects. In years past, we’ve created a series of adorable felt animal ornaments that can be great animal stuffies for kids—or unique gift toppers that last past the holidays. Because we always want to out-do ourselves with every holiday season, our illustrator and felt crafter extraordinaire Krista came up with this precious DIY felt reindeer, perfect for some yuletide cheer! Say hello to our new friends Juniper and Spruce.

Start this DIY felt reindeer project by printing the downloadable instructions on the right hand side at the top of this post. Make sure to join our ever-growing craft community, if you’re not a member already! This PDF also includes a full list of tools and materials that you can use when you head to your local craft store.
You’ll also want to make sure you are getting a higher quality wool or wool blend felt for this DIY reindeer felt. A lower quality felt can rip while you are stitching.
Then, pick out some coordinating colors of embroidery floss and use a needle with a slightly larger eye for threading the floss. Feel free to get creative with your color palette. This is your DIY felt reindeer! For our reindeer, we used a slightly darker shade of brown for the back panel to create some variation.
Once you have your materials, print the PDF template as a guide for cutting your felt pieces. Then you can follow the step-by-step photo tutorial below as you craft. We added some detailing near the tail with some white embroidery floss, but this is totally optional. The white dots are just a scattering of tiny French knots, but they add that extra something to these DIY cuties!
If you want to give your reindeer a holiday makeover, our template also includes patterns to add the Christmas accessories. You can even make a little red felt nose for Rudolph! This DIY felt reindeer can be a great addition to your holiday home décor or an adorable stocking stuffer for kids.

Actually, only female reindeer have antlers (not horns) all other female deer species do not.
Acctually, both female and male reindeers have horns
Good to know!
Can these be made with cricut explore?
Technically the Explore is supposed to cut felt if you add a backing to it before you place it on the mat, but we haven’t tried it in a very long time. Cutting felt on the Maker works so well because of the rotary blade.
Not sure why you don’t list glue/glue gun in the initial tools/materials list at the beginning of the post … ? Just wondering.
Whoops! That was just a mistake 🙂
Love these dear deer!!!
Made three sets last year in different colorways. They are fun to make and darling with done!! Thinking of making more this year as gifts.
Thank you!
Thanks Sharon! We love them too and we’re so glad that you enjoy creating them! We can’t wait to use them for our holiday decorations again this year!
I love these felted deer and have downloaded the pattern and instructions. I am wondering if, as a member, there is a way to print the step by step picture instructions. I want to make these with my granddaughter (11) and think she would benefit with a show and tell method. Many thanks for spreading your talent and joy among us!
Hi Marsha! You can save the image (either drag it to your desktop or right-click and “save as”), then print it from there!
SVG please? 🙂
Done & done! The post downloads are now updated. 🙂
Thank you! I have to say, this is the most well-constructed felt project I’ve ever made. Bravo to the artist who designed this little deer! I hope there are more projects like this on the way! (the narwhal is on my list too)
Thank you Michelle! This was Krista’s project– I’ll be sure to let her know 🙂
Do you have any pattern for felt Xmas trees? Thanks
Hi, great suggestion! We don’t have anything right now but this could definitely be made with felt: https://liagriffith.com/crepe-christmas-tree-cones/
