Heavy Crepe Paper Tulips – Member Make Workshop
For this month’s Member Make workshop, Meagan will be showing our members how to make these heavy crepe paper tulips in a vibrant coral color. We’ve made many different versions of tulips over the years in both paper and felt. But this is the first time we’ve used heavy crepe paper!
To prepare for our live workshop on March 17th, check out supplies list below. Then be sure to read the instructions for how to join us! If you can’t make the live workshop, we will post the recording here for you to watch later.
This video is for members only.

We love these too-lip much
Many of the tulips we’ve made in the past have had more of an open shape. However, these heavy crepe paper tulips are more closed and must be shaped in a particular way to get the petals just right. During the workshop you will learn our shaping techniques for this flower as well as how to add more detail to your petals with PanPastel.
While we love the bold and bright color of coral, you are always welcome to make your heavy crepe paper tulips in a different color. When you are done making your flowers, we’d love to see them! Be sure to post photos in our crafter’s community or on Instagram with the hashtag #MadeWithLia.
Skill level: Advanced due to all of the specific shaping needed for these petals
Crafting tips: Getting the perfect closed shape for these flowers takes a lot of gentle shaping. If you overstretch a petal, you would need to start over with a new one.

Meagan is such an asset to team Lia. I don’t know how in the world she designs these amazing flowers then is able to assemble them in to such realistic flowers. Yay Meagan!
She certainly is! I will share this message with her. 🙂
Hi — any other suggestions for tulip color combinations — instead of coral paper with an orange pan pastel?
Tulips come in so many colors! White crepe with pink or yellow pastel, pink crepe with orange or darker pink pastel, red crepe with orange or pink pastel, orange crepe with pink or yellow pastel. . . pick your favorite color and add a bit of pastel to add depth. Have fun with it!
I love these! I look forward to more projects that use the heavy crepe paper. I love the look of it but find most projects are with the fine paper. I have a lot of the heavy paper and don’t really know what to do with it.
Check out our Glossary, you can see by scrolling through which are made from heavy crepe paper. You can also stretch it out a bit to make it a bit more refined and use some of the other templates. https://liagriffith.com/paper-flower-glossary/
Oh wow! Thank you so much, I didn’t know that the glossary existed! So many options, thank you again!
Enjoy!!
I’m making dozens of these tulips for Easter decortions and I just ran out of the 30mm balls. Can I use the 36mm cotton spun eggs instead? I just Love these tulips, great job as usual!!!
Yes, that should work. 🙂
I agree…thanks for changing the picture tutorial format! It really IS better for printing and saving. You ladies are sooo wonderful! You’re always improving techniques to make it easier for us!
That is the goal! We love what we do. 🙂
Oh Thank You for changing the picture tutorial format ! It makes it so much easier to print out now for my binder !
Great to hear!
Could you consider offering the digital cut files in PNG format? I only have a CRICUT Joy machine so I have to edit the SVG files into several files that are 4.5” wide and editing PNG files would be so much easier than editing SVG files.
Unfortunately, you will not have success cutting the crepe paper with a Joy since it does not have a rotary blade. You are better off cutting the crepe by hand, as the fine-point blade will ruin your crepe paper. Here is a video we did that might be helpful: https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/cutting-machines-for-crepe-paper/
The good news is that most of our crepe flower templates are easy when cutting by hand and you can save time when stacking the crepe paper.
I hope you can join us for the next Crepe Paper Master Class in May.
You two just get better and better! Can’t wait to make these!! Thank you!
Awww, thank you! We are learning every day. 🙂
Hello,
When will the photo tutorial be ready? I love the new format for your tutorials.
They are up now. We generally post them right after the video is over.
Heavy!
Yes!
Are you using the heavy or light crepe paper for the tilips?
Both! You can see the materials list and now see the photo tutorial. The petals are heavy with the detail in extra-fine.
I have 1 inch foam balls, will those work for this flower?
You can use the foam balls.
Tulips are just about my all-time favorite, next to daisy’s! I’m ready to start! Thanks for this class!
This is such a gorgeous tulip too! 🙂
The SVG file has 2 different sizes of petals, but the template only has one. Can you please tell me which is correct?
Thank you!
Thank you so much for pointing this out! The SVG is correct with the two petal sizes and the PDF has been updated to match.
I have also tried to make a closed tulip after learning the basics in the intro class. It came out ok, but I am looking forward to learning your design. Bonus that I already have most of the supplies left from the class in January! Just marked my calendar – thanks!
That is fantastic! I love that you are stocked up. 🙂
Can’t wait to get started on this project….have been playing around with creating closed Tulips for a while now but so far they have not come out as closed as I would wish. So intrigued to see how you came up the solution so am waiting with bated breath 🙂
Thanks so much.
Melanie
This is such a beautiful version of tulips. I am excited to learn with you!
