Cardstock Double Hellebore
Blooming Through the Frost
Most of the garden is asleep toward the end of the year, but the hellebore picks this moment to open. Our cardstock double hellebore captures that winter bravery in layers of deep plum, with a cluster of pale stamens glowing at its center.

A double hellebore carries an extra row or two of petals, which gives it a fuller, almost rose-like shape. We cut those layers from cardstock in Sugar Plum, then shape each one with a scoring stylus and ball tool from our paper flower tools so the petals cup gently toward the middle. A soft brush of Permanent Red Shade PanPastel adds depth near the base. For the center, Vanilla Ice Cream cardstock forms the fine stamens, and a touch of lime marker and chartreuse pencil gives them that fresh green tint you see on real blooms. Forest Moss cardstock makes the leaves, and Extra-Fine Crepe Paper in Fern wraps a sturdy floral wire stem. The stamens are tiny, so a cutting machine makes this project much easier, and tweezers help lift the delicate pieces off the mat.
Hellebores are often called the Christmas rose, and they’re one of Lia’s favorite winter flowers. What look like petals are actually sepals, which is why the blooms hold their color for weeks in the garden. They’re also toxic to pets, so a paper version is the friendliest way to bring them indoors. Set a few stems in a low vase on the holiday table, or wire them into our Paper Hellebore Winter Wreath for a door that welcomes guests all season.
If you’ve made our Frosted Paper Double Hellebore, this cardstock version will feel familiar, with a little more structure in every petal. Download the printable template or SVG file and follow along with the step-by-step tutorial. When your hellebore is finished, we’d love to see it. FAQs
Can I make this hellebore without a cutting machine?
Yes. You can cut the petals and leaves by hand, though the fine stamens take patience with detail scissors.
Can I make the hellebore in other colors?
Absolutely. Real hellebores bloom in creamy white, soft pink, and deep burgundy, so choose any cardstock shade you love.
Will cardstock petals hold their shape?
Yes. Once scored and cupped, cardstock keeps its form beautifully, even in a wreath.
