Crepe Paper Cosmos Cupcakes
Cosmic Confections
One of the greatest things about crafting is all of the wonderful discoveries that can happen while you're creating, learning, and trying new things. In celebration of those unexpected moments that can be so rewarding, we are showing you how to make crepe paper cosmos cupcakes today! If you're unfamiliar with cosmos cupcakes, this flower variety was a happy accident, discovered in 2007 by a gardener in California. After spotting some cosmos in her garden with unique cup-shaped blooms, she saved the seeds, planted them, and nurtured them for years. Once the unique trait was stabilized, she sold the seeds to a horticultural company in England that's known for developing unusual plants. Now, it's their best-selling seed and has even won an award! Pretty amazing, right?

Moving right along with our dessert-themed flowers, these Crepe Paper Cosmos Cupcakes offer a sweet counterpoint to the Dark Chocolate Cosmos in this month’s collection. With their softly cupped petals and playful, almost confection-like shape, these blooms feel like spring in its most joyful form. Looking for more paper cosmos to round out your garden? Be sure to explore the rest of our collection for even more inspiration and variety.
These beginner-friendly Crepe Paper Cosmos Cupcakes keep things light and easy while offering a chance to explore texture and form. Begin by cutting your pieces with detail scissors or a cutting machine, whichever you prefer. Then build the center by stretching, folding, and fringing the paper to create that signature “cupcake” look. It's a small detail that makes a big visual impact.
From there, each petal layer adds to the story. The soft crepe paper naturally creates gentle curves and movement, helping your flower feel airy and full without much effort. This is one of those projects where a little variation actually makes the finished piece more charming. So, don’t be afraid to go a little off script and follow your instincts.
In contrast to the other (no less beautiful) versions of these flowers in our collection this month, our Crepe Paper Cosmos Cupcakes bring a distinctly playful energy. For example, they’re perfect for brightening up a small arrangement, styling a spring table, or adding a touch of surprise to a bouquet. Keep them crisp and white for a clean, modern look, or experiment with soft pastels and cheerful hues to match your style and mood.
This is a great project for experimentation. Try different petal placements, adjust the fullness, and notice how each small choice shifts the final bloom. That creative intuition is part of what makes paper flower crafting so rewarding — and so uniquely yours.

@Erin
Back to the TopLia, Thank you for the update. The the PDF for hand cutting there is only one leaf size. On the SVG it shows two sizes. Can you update the PDF too, please? Another issue I had, was not knowing where the leaves were supposed to go on, the stem of the flower ( which didn’t look right, ripped off, And looked at the picture and placed on a wire alone) or on their own wire? That information added to the tutorial would be very helpful, please. Also how many leaves per flower is the recommendation for this flower.
Prepping to take to my grandkids what I need in supplies.
The last step of the tutorial shows adding the leaf to a wire, we chose to have the leaves on their own wire for arranging purposes but you can add them to the flower stem if thats what you prefer. I always love finding photos of the real flower through a quick google search to see how they grow, you may find this helpful if you are questioning the placement of the leaves. I always love an odd number and would make about 3 leaves per flower. The PDF has been updated.
Lia, I do not see the updates, I see a black area but no writing . Also the photo directions show to curl the sepals. But that is not included in the pattern.
Just FYI , I will figure it out.
My granddaughters want me to make these when I go to visit them this month. They have them growing on their land.
Thank you.
Sorry about that! The template is updated now with the crepe paper type and sepal 🙂
FYI….The patterns are not updated with what is heavy or fine parts of the flower.
We have updated the PDF Template to include the color and type of crepe paper! 🙂
I’m assuming petal “A” is cut on the extra fine and petal “B” on the heavy crepe paper?
Hi Erin,
Yes you are correct petal A is cut in extra-fine, petal B is cut in heavy. We will update the pattern to to include this information!
