VIDEO: Crepe Paper Football Mums
Kick off your crafternoon with some mums
This is the time of year when we love to make mums! Last month Meagan made some frosted paper mums that are perfect for beginners. And now for our October collection, she has designed these beautiful crepe paper football mums.
As you’ll see in our video tutorial below, this crepe paper flower has a lot of thin petals to shape, curl, and glue on. So we would say this is more of an intermediate paper flower project.

Become a MemberAlthough we’ve made a lot of mums, this is the first time we’ve made crepe paper football mums. These flowers got their name because they were originally given as corsages for the homecoming football game and dance. That being said, we’d much rather use these big, wild blooms to make our own paper flower bouquet!
As with most of our paper flower arrangements, we like to mix in some smaller buds with our full-size blooms. Our video tutorial will show you how to make both. To get started, check out our tools and materials list, then download the flower SVG file or template below.

Love these mums as an addition to my fall wreath! Any tips on preventing the Cricut from cutting the petal off the strip of paper that makes the inside petals apply easier? I’ve tried different pressures but no luck!
Unfortunately the cricut over cuts sharp corners sometimes with the rotary blade. I would recommend hand cutting those petals for the best results.
HI Lia. I downloaded the football mums but didn’t get the instructions!
Hey there! The instructions for this flower is the video.
When I downloaded this svg it is a print then cut. Is that right?
No, it is not. Here is a video that helps you upload our SVG files. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/how-to-use-files-cricut/
love this flower, however, i had a hard time. the center not connect together I had to glue the petals back on the strip after. so my center curl was not great. also would hot glue ruin this? the tacky glue and I just seem to not work well together on flower petals
Hi Tina! Be really gentle taking the paper off the cutting mat or while curling, otherwise they will rip easily! I wouldn’t recommend hot glue cause it may bulk it out to much, but if that makes it easier for you, give it a try on a few!
Loved making this flower and it turned out so beautifully. It is so fragile while making though, a few petals tore off on the centers and it seems like it wouldn’t be very sturdy in a bouquet. Is there anything I can treat it with to make it sturdier?
Hi Sherri! You could make it in double-sided (or even heavy) crepe paper if it feels too delicate for a bouquet!
I just finished my first of these wonderful mums and I want to thank you for such a great video. I cut it out with my maker and without the hand cutting, the flower and bud worked up beautifully. I can’t wait to make many more!p
Oh we love to hear this!!
Another great tutorial – thank you! One of my favorite Lia crepe paper flowers. !
Yay so happy to hear this, Renee!
Bonjour,
Je suis débutante avec la machine Cricut explorer 2.
J’aimerais bien faire cette merveilleuse fleur.
Pouvez vous me dire quel lame prendre ?
Quel programmation mettre (le papier crépon n’est pas dans la liste de matériel?
Merci pour tout.
Unfortunately, the Explore 2 does not have the rotary blade which is the only one you can successfully cut crepe paper with. Here is a video where we talk about this. https://liagriffith.com/craft-academy/cutting-machines-for-crepe-paper/
The video instruction for this bloom was really good, but I missed the photo instructions too. Especially as I like the visual effect of comparing to see if I’m on the right track.
Thanks for the feedback, Melanie. I made a note of this for future projects that could be better off with a photo tutorial instead of this quick format video!
This was an amazing video tutorial! Thank you!
Thanks Alice!!
Was wondering what the spray can is. Not in supply list & couldn’t make out what it is in the video .
Thank you for catching that! We just updated the post to include the fixative spray.
Can these be made out of card stock? TIA
This pattern is made specifically for crepe paper (taking in mind the direction of the grain and the stretch & weight of the paper). You can certainly try it with cardstock but it would be harder to shape these delicate petals.
That was really the best videotutorial you guys have ever made 🙂 No questions left – i’m starting right away.
Can’t wait to see your finished flowers Linda!
