DIY Felt Craft Kittens
This project needs to carry a cuteness overload warning label! These three little felt craft kittens are such fun to make and might just be the cutest felt animals we have designed yet – it’s ok for me to say that right?! I think it’s the detail in the designs that makes them extra special. The pink paws, the little whiskers, the bead eyes and the teeny bell on the collar all contribute to making these felt kitty cats simply irresistible.

As with all my DIY felt projects I encourage you to begin with a good quality felt. I use a wool felt from Felt on the Fly which is soft to touch and super-easy to work with. Make sure your threads are a shade darker so that the fur stitching detail isn’t lost on your finished product. Our paw pads, collars and noses are attached using a low temperature glue gun but you can use fabric glue if you don’t have one. The stripes on our grey kitty were drawn on using a fabric marker and their balls of wool are small felt balls which you can buy in your local craft store.

Hello, I am looking to make some felt cats for a friend’s new baby. I want to make a mobile with them but don’t know how big these cats are?

These are an average of 4.5 inches tall. You can resize them easily when printing your template if you would like them larger or smaller. They would make a darling mobile.
Hi, I’ve kind of just dropped into making things with felt etc … but really I don’t know anything about it. I’m more at home with a cross stitch chart & a bundle of threads, but my finished work is just a picture, yes it takes months of work & a small degree of skill, but I’ve recently been made a grandma by my son & his wife & I’d love to start making things for her that she can eventually start playing with. I made the whole ‘Birth Announcements’ & I also cross stitched her 1st Birthday card, but now she’s 15mths & crawling, I’d like to give her something to play with, with a 100% certainty that it’s child friendly & I never have to take her to an A&E because she’s put something in her mouth that could very well be dangerous. Anyway, sorry got off track there!!
In my short journey I have seen a lot of people talking about machines that cut a host of fabrics & card, but what are they? Are they expensive? Being on a very tight budget we don’t have a lot of money to spend on luxury goods & a lot of my crafts have been with recycled household waste like bottles that I have put lights in, various plastic washing tabs that are now containers or I’ve cut up to make other things. I’m also disabled & a lot of money goes on taxi’s to & from my specialists as I cannot travel on public transport as I can’t get my wheelchair through the narrow isles, but would it be worth my while to put a little bit of money to one side each month & eventually be able to maybe buy a 2nd hand one, but as I don’t know what I am doing or what it is that I need, what sort of machine would I need. I’ve love to make my own cards & cut out templates in paper & fabric, but where do I start??
Any help would be gratefully received.

Congratulations on your granddaughter! The machine you’re hearing about is the Cricut Maker, an electronic cutting machine that cuts felt, fabric, crepe paper, leather, and several other materials. It’s an investment, but probably wouldn’t be worth it if you’re happy cutting your projects by hand 🙂
We loved this project. Kept my 9 yo busy all weekend. We used our Cricut Maker to cut the felt.
Just one comment, the SVG file is missing two pieces for the orange kittens paws. It only cuts two pieces for the paws, so we had to cut that mat twice. Something to address of you ever go back and review the pattern.

We LOOOOOVEEEE all of your felt projects, Lia. Thank you so much for sharing them. Just wonder why don’t you include SVG files, they might make them easier for us who own Cricut machine to cut out the patterns with chipboard or cardstock paper and trace them on the felt then cut?
We do not create SVG files for our felt projects because we do not want to encourage our readers to try cutting felt with their machines. We have not have the best of luck cutting felt with our Cricut, so we did not want to create any confusion for our readers. We try to design our patterns so that they are easy to cut out by hand, and I recommend you try printing the patterns out onto cardstock.

This will be my first project from Lia Griffith, I’m so excited. What type of needle do you use for your felt projects, the kitten photos appear to contain a simple cross stitch needle and/or a craft needle, similar to these needles (found on Amazon as an example):

Exactly! Those craft needles would work perfectly. Embroidery needles are too large for the felt stuffies because they will leave big holes in the felt. Just make sure that the craft needles have a large enough eye to thread your embroidery floss through 🙂 Best of luck!

I have lots of quality felt because I’ve been wanting to do felt crafting. I had done some felt crafting as a child which my mom taught me. Seeing all the beautiful and fun felt crafting on Pinterest just inspires me further. Thank again Lia, for these cute as can be kitties! Perhaps doggies and bunnies next? (yes, I have a doggie and my dear sweet rabbit, Hopper who was with us over 10 years, had passed last year).

These are adorable and make the cutest gifts for cat lovers. I think they would make adorable Christmas ornaments too. Where would I find the beads for the eyes? I cannot locate these at my local craft store. (I only have one:-()
We are all huge cat lovers, most of us in the office have a cat at home:-) We got our beads at a local craft supply store called Collage, I would think you should be able to find them online. Have you tried Amazon?

Aw, so adorable. All the little details are so perfect, makes them almost look real. Love colors used for their bodies. Hope I can make them look as good as original creator with the details.
Will be getting felt so I can make these soon. Maybe forgot to put in how to’s for the kitties? They come in handy so I don’t miss a step. I sure am going to be busy gal making all these felt critters, will be cute to send to our grand daughter at college so she’ll have little something from us. She ought to be there sometime today, her family and her on way from CO yesterday to San Rafael, CA. Maybe her sister will like some too. Always make sure we give evenly to both girls.
