Become a MemberOne celebration we absolutely love here in Portland is the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). Traditionally a celebration of victory after the Battle Of Puebla in the late 1800’s, today Cinco de Mayo is more about celebrating Mexican culture and traditions. Here in Portland the entire waterfront area is awash with color as the Cinco de Mayo fiesta takes over between the 2nd and 5th May. There’s a fun carnival, lively music, delicious food carts, traditional Mariachi performance and an artisan village selling traditional Mexican arts and crafts. For those of you having your own Mexican themed celebration this year, or those who would just love a little bright and beautiful paper cut banner for birthday celebrations, parties or family brunch, we have designed this intricate DIY papel picado for you. Using a variety of orange and pink papers in hot and cool colors we cut these flags using our cricut cutting machine then simply strung them onto garden twine. You will find the SVG cut file below. I have also included the PDF file for this project so that you can cut the flags by hand using an exacto knife. The teeny weeny flags were cut on our cutting machine then attached to skewers using a little glue. These make great drinks stirrers or can be attached to cocktail sticks to make cute cupcake toppers. For those of you with your eye on the beautiful jug of margarita cocktail – I’ll be sharing the recipe for that little gem on Friday so make sure you come back! Enjoy! ~ Lia

Hi Lia, came across your post when looking for a banner to print on my Cricut Explore One. My daughter is planning a Bridal/Groom shower for her best friend & it is a “Fiests” themed shower. She would like banners like these but with bride/groom’s names cut out. Can you help me with this? Can these be edited at all once downloaded? Thank you for your time. Doreena
How fun with a bridal/groom shower!! This post has all the letters https://liagriffith.com/paper-cut-alphabet-letters/

What kind of paper did you use? Did you like that or do you have any other recommendations? Thank you!!
Hi. We used text weight paper, but you could use cardstock as well.
Hi Lia, where can I buy text weight paper?
We order from PaperPapers.com or Paper Source!
You are so creative! I just love all of your ideas. I’m not crafty at all but I feel I can manage this one. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much! 🙂
Thank you so much for these!
Enjoy!
THANK you, Lia – these are delightful and I love the colors you chose 😀
Thank you! Hope you will use this for a fun summer fiesta party!
Have been meaning to ask you how your Dad is doing since your Mom passed away. Hope he is doing as well as can be expected. Not easy for anybody after a long marriage. Hope his health is good. Getting older is not always fun. Hub and I are in 70’s, (I’ll be 75 in July and wonder where the years went).
Happy weekend
Dear JaneEllen, you are so thoughtful. Thanks for thinking of me and my dad. He is doing really well, he has found a sweet little lady friend who is also a widow.
Seeing these colorful flags makes me wish even more I had Cricut, cutting out all those teeny little parts won’t be easy but will give it a try. Wonder if I could find colored ink jet vellum or figure out how to give it color? Love these. You are so clever and talented Lia.
Thanks so much for sharing all you do with us. I’m always telling people about your site and wonderful things you share. Was a great day when I found your blog. Happy Happy weekend
I would recommend looking at the vellum at Paper-Papers, they have a great selection of colors. I don’t know if they work on ink jet so make sure you ask. Happy Friday!
Thank you so much! These are so festive and will be perfect for decorations for an upcoming party.
Hope you have a fun party, wish I could pop by;-)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE LOVE BANNER AND THE MEXICAN BANNERS… I WROTE TO YOU AND ASKED DID NOT THINK I WOULD SEE ANY BANNERS…BUT I WAS WRONG… THEY ARE SO PRETTY… THANK YOU AGAIN… I AM NOT COMPUTER SAUVE , WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE SINGLE BANNER CAN BE SLICED TO PUT AMY & KEITH’S NAME ON TWO OF THEM…
Happy to hear you like the papel picado banners. You would need help from a designer to put Amy’s and Keith’s name or you can use a different pattern for their name.
Lia Thank You so much. These are beautiful
Thank you:) Happy Cinco de Mayo!
(sigh) your awesome Lia!!!!! Love them 😉
You are sweet, thank you!
