VIDEO: DIY Paper Bird Holiday Decoration
Last year I designed this paper bird in a larger form and used it as my tree topper. You may remember it in my Handcrafted Holiday video. It was such a hit that I filmed a full video tutorial on how to makes these as love birds. This year we are making a mini version of the birds for our Woodland Holiday tree and they are just too precious. Below you can see the video on how to makes these birds in the larger form and the small version will be just the same. I am including the printable pattern as well as the SVG cut file for these little birds. For the cut file, you can make them about 5 inches long to match our size. Note that in order to use the SVG you will need a Cricut Explore or the Silhouette with the design software upgrade. If you would like the larger version of the bird, you can find them in this post. Stay tuned for more of our handcrafted ornaments and the full tree reveal on Black Friday!

Hey good evening from UK ! The video for this does not seem to be working , any ideas? Thank you so much xx
Thanks for letting us know! We just fixed it so it should be working for you now.
Is there any way to get the pattern for the larger size shown in the video?
Yes both sizes of the bird are available in the downloads now!
Is there a way to just purchase the pattern for the DIY bird decoration?
Hi! We don’t sell individual downloads, but you can always sign up for a monthly membership then cancel after you have downloaded the project(s) you want!
Is it possible to just buy one item, instead of doing a monthly membership… as I’m decorating a human rights fundraiser and it is a one-off?
Love this dove… it would be awesome, but I don’t want to have to unsubscribe and all that.. too time focused, thanks
Hi Elizabeth, send an email to hello@liagriffith.com and we’ll figure something out for you 🙂
I just purchased a membership in order to download the template for the paper birds. but when I try to login, it just takes me back to the video link, no templates accessible????? Please help ASAP!
Hi Kathi, you might want to try a different browser. Make sure you’re logged in (it will say “My Craft Room” at the top right of the page), and then you’ll be able to download any project. If you still have trouble, send an email to hello@liagriffith.com!
Hello Lia, I recently discovered your page and it´s really fascinating me!!
i wonder if this figures can be done with wafer paper, suppose yes, but I had to ask and congratulate you for all resources that you are sharing with us!
You are so generous to let us download so many creative material!!
xx
Mara
Hello and welcome:-) I haven’t tried using wafer paper but I know some of my readers have tried so I would say give it a go and let me know how it turns out.
Hi Lisa, what paper have you used in this particular bird tutorial. I don’t believe you mentioned it unless I missed it. Thank You! 🙂
I used metallic paper from Paper-Papers in Ice Silver 🙂
Mil gracias por enseñarnos estas cosas tan bonitas.
Pocas manualidades he visto que me hayan cautivado tanto.
Voy a realizar unos regalos y quisiera saber el papel adecuado. ya he visto que una amiga a preguntado lo mismo pero sigo sin saber que tipo de papel y de cuantos gramos es el papel.
gracias por el video, por que derrochais alegria y felididad.
Thank you! You can use any paper you like really but I would stay away from a heavy card stock as it will not curve as nicely.
Me dio mucho gusto encontrar tan linda pagina, felicidades y gracias por mostrarnos todas sus hermosas habilidades.
Thank you;-)
Its so beautiful. thank you for sharing
🙂
Piękne! Zrobiłam na własną choinkę 🙂 zrobiłam także sowy z szyszek według twojego pomysłu i także wyszły świetne
Great to hear Lidia!
Thank you, so much for sharing. I have to make two. The first one all awry, but improve on the second one.
Good to hear. A little practice helps. 😉
Это просто потрясающе!!!!!!!Очень красиво и самое главное легко!!!! Спасибо Вам большое!!!!
Wonderful! Happy you found it easy. 🙂
Your projects are just awesome, I love these birds, thank you for sharing your expertise, it is really appreciated
Thank you:) These birds are really special to me so I am happy to hear that you are enjoying them!
Hi Lia
Thanks for the beautiful pattern! I’ve made the large bird, which I love, and I’m planning to give a few as gifts. I’ve had to use the hand-cut PDFs as I don’t have a paper-cutting machine, and I was wondering if the small bird PDF pattern is meant to be enlarged before printing? My finished small bird came out at only 3.5 inches long (and was not easy to glue), but the one in your photo looks bigger than that. Thanks again!
Sometimes when you print from a PDF it reduces the size. You can enlarge it for sure. They look great small and large. Share photos of your finished birds. 🙂
Lia, I am just thrilled to have found your website. Your creations are so beautiful and richly detailed and the bird project is just gorgeous. I located the larger pattern version and have just printed it. I will import it to my ScanNCut and spend a lovely afternoon making a flock! What a generous crafter you are to share this and how fortunate I feel to have discovered your site. I will be a regular! Thank you very, very much! Warm Christmas wishes to you and your family.
You are a genius Cathy! I am sitting here with my niece and nephews making another 12!
I have tried to find written directions to put the bird together but don’t find anything but the video, can you please put written directions so I can put me bird together. I’m 74 and don’t keep up with the video very well. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Phyllis Smith
Sorry Phyllis. I have yet to do a written tutorial. It would have to be with photos as it is pretty complicated. That is why I thought the video would be better.
Hi Pam
the birds are lovely, but when I went to put them together
I notice I was missing the second piece which is the wing.
Is there a way you could send me that piece. Thank you
have a Happy Thanksgiving
Ellen
Just to let you know, I have updated the templates to the one in the video. All the pieces were there, just a different configuration. You can download the new ones now. 🙂
Thanks for posting these cute little birds. The small template does not have the second layer that you put on top of the main piece.
Hi Charlotte, I have uploaded a new template that matches the one in the video. What was there was the earlier version. You can upload the corrected one now.
I am trying to assemble this Lovely Bird now, but seem to be missing a piece! The wing feathers are not included in the cutout. Help! I only have 8 pieces…. Thanks
Hi Pam, I need to look at the pattern again and check. Hang tight:)
Hi Lia, love all the beautiful ideas on your site. I downloaded the small bird svg for my Cameo. Cut file works great but it seems to be missing the second piece you use in the video above. What am I missing?
All the pieces were there, but in a different arrangement. I have uploaded the files as shown in the video now. My mistake for not catching it. 😉
missing piece number 2 from the tutorial in the template. otherwise love these.
My mistake as I used a prior version. . . the final is now ready for you to download! 😉
She is LOVELY! Thank you so much for sharing this. Great job on the video, as well.
You just put a huge smile on my face. Thank you!
Hi Lia! Thanks for this beautiful bird. I downloaded both the PDF and the SVG and both files seem to be missing the Wing Feathers that you glue to the body in the first step. Should we be cutting the body twice and cutting off the lower section?
So sorry! Fixed! 😉
The vector download doesn’t seem to have the second piece you attach to the body? Do I just not see it? thanks
So sorry! The fixed template is up. 😉
what kind of paper did you use? these are beautiful
I used white metallic paper in the text weight option http://www.paper-papers.com/designers/lia.html
Hi please could you show how to make the smaller bird as the template is different to the one in the video. I really want to make these for gifts 😀
Fixed! The right version is now ready to download! 🙂
Thank you for sharing this lovely little bird. However I am a bit confused with the video, as the templates (SVG and printed) are different to the parts you are working with. For example there isn’t the second set of wings that you glue to the main body at the beak – instead we have 2 separate, narrow wings that aren’t joined at all. I hope this makes sense! It’s very hard to describe. Kind regards T
So sorry, I have posted the corrected files. 😉
Those paper birds are awesome!! Thanks for sharing : )
You are welcome;-)
Hi. I seem to be missing the piece with the beak and wings that are to be attached to the middle part of the body. It’s the first piece you add after you say curling the tail feathers up and wing feathers down. I’m using SVG file with Cricut explore. The birds is so cute, but I am confused. Thanks for your help. Trudy
Sorry, the new one is fixed and ready for you. 😉
Hi. I seem to be missing a part of the wings in the svg. In your video you show a beak attached to wings as the first piece you add. I have not gotten that piece. But I seem to have two tiny seperate wings. Can you help. The birds are so cute!
So sorry, the new one is up and ready for you. 😉
adorable – THANK YOU 😉
You are welcome;-)
Lia Thank You for the Love Bird. I am so happy to see you have some videos sure hope you do more. I love all your work . You are a talented lady
You just made my day! Thank you!! I hope to do more videos!!
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent!
Thank you!
I am always amazed by what you create out of paper.
Awe… you are too sweet:)
Love the mini, I am having trouble opening the file in the explore. Help please
Hi Laura!! Vector upload should work fine, if not call Cricut customer service. I am not able to recreate the problem:)
