DIY Paper Star Window Decoration
We have a Swede on the team who was adamant that we design and make a traditional Swedish paper star this year as part of our Holiday decoration range. And who are we to deny?! Paper star lanterns are such a beautiful decoration that I would quite happily hang in my house all year round! Our version is available as an SVG so you can cut it on your cutting machine if you have one. We are also offering this DIY paper star template as a PDF for those who like to cut by hand. Simply download the PDF, and print 8 copies out onto your chosen card stock. You can cut the holes by hand or a use hole punch. Score down the lines, fold and glue each point together. Join points 1 and 8 together with a length of string tied in a bow so that you can pop the pendant light inside or change bulbs as necessary. We purchased this pendant at Ikea but you will find that most electrical stores stock them in various lengths. If you would like a tutorial for these paper star lanterns you can pop back to this post which is a similar design (todays version has been adapted to hang more easily!). Make a few to hang from your ceiling or just one as a feature in the center of your window. Wherever you choose to hang your DIY paper star, we would love to see pics. Share with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DIYDreamingWithLia and we will share our favorites. Thanks! ~ Lia

What kind of light do you use inside?
Hi Kathy,
We used the HEMMA pendant light from Ikea, it can be found here https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemma-cord-set-white-10175810/
Hi Lia, I ‘m a new member and so excited about making this star lantern! Just downloaded the PDF files as I don’t have a Cricut, and cut out one piece to see how it will look like. …Now I have two quick questions. How come there are 2 patterns for the star, one with punch hole guidelines and one plain? Does the plain one goes to the back? Do you use the one with punch hole guidelines as a template?
Another question is that I only have a plier-like hole punch on hand that can’t seem to reach to some areas. What kind of hole punch did you use for this? I know these questions sound stupid to ask but I feel like i’m missing something and can’t figure it out.
Thank you for sharing your great craft works with us. I can’t wait to make more stuff from your collections!
Hi Ayumi,
The plain pattern is provided if you would like to leave your star without punches. We used a classic hole punch and folded each star section in half to reach the center punching two layers at a time 🙂
Hi Lia, I’m new on the blog 🙂
Regarding this project, if I became a member I’ll give the photo or video tutorial of this one?
Many thanks and congrats for your amazing job!
Cheers from Italy 🙂
Hi Silvia,
If you are a member you will have access to the pdf template and SVG cut file for this star! There is no video tutorial for this project but there is a photo tutorial.
Is this Star flat on the back or 3d ,What is the size finished ? I have a Brother Scan & Cut but have not read the directions yet .Will this work for the beautiful STAR ? Thanks so much you are a sweetie . My Email is broke so could you reply another way ?
Hi Sherrie!
The back of the star is 3D as well, but if that’s an issue you could easily make it flat by not folding where it would typically fold. It would just take a few creative adjustments. 🙂
As far as we know you are able to download SVG files to a Brother Scan ’n Cut; however, the machine may convert SVG files to a different format in the process. We would recommend contacting Brother Customer Support directly for more up-to-date information. Unfortunately we don’t have another way of making contact with you, we hope this response reaches you!
Hi Lia! I love these so much and am trying to make them on my cricut as we speak however the score lines aren’t lining up correctly with the cut, I loaded your .svg file into design space and have not altered anything, going straight to “go” in design space. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? Thanks so much!
It works fine on our end! Make sure that after changing the lines over to “score” that you then “attach” them to the star cut out shape, otherwise it will not line up correctly. Cricut has a great FAQ available that shows how to do this!
I have the same problem and can’t locate help on the Cricut FAQ

Hi Lia, I have a question. I just recently got my Cricut Air and my husband also bought me an Ipad to go with it. My question is how do I take the files that I downloaded from your site and add them to the cricut design space on the iPad? Is there a way to do that? I’ve been trying for a couple days now. I figured if anybody would know it would be you. Thank you so much, for all that you do, on here, for us.
I don’t know if you can upload files from your iPad onto your design space…I’m pretty sure that you have to download the files onto your computer first. I would ask Cricut customer service to make sure though! Thank you so much for your lovely words of support!
Yes, you do have to use a computer rather than the iPad, but once they’re downloaded & opened, they’ll be available to use from your iPad.
I don’t know if you’ll be able to help me or not… I stupidly changed how/where the .svg progam/files go, so they’re not being recognized by Cricut. HELP! What program should they be attached to? I’ve been struggling with this since yesterday… I should really know better. Thanks!
You could always just download the file again! I would re-download the svg to your desktop and then upload that into your Design Space. I hope this helps!
Thank you! I was able to get the star pattern & have cut it out & assembled it. It’s lovely! I’m going to make one for each of my 2 sisters.
Wonderful news!!
Just had to print out star patterns, try to make at least one to hang up in window. would be very pretty I think, already have the light to put into it. What kind of paper did you use? Heavy or lighter? Have heavier but think it might be too hard to put together if I use that kind of paper, would be too rigid. Would like it to be strong enuf to hang.
We got our first snow tonight. Was coming down like it did in MT. Love it, love it.
Hope you are all having great weekend.
This one used a card stock since it is larger. You can use a ruler and a store tool to help with those long folds. I sure hope we get a little skiff of snow here in Portland. Since I did grow up in Idaho, I miss the snow sometimes.
