We have Back to School on our minds! Although my own daughter is all grown up, we have several team members at Lia Griffith HQ with young kids who are getting ready to go back to school at the end of August. So prepare yourself for plenty of projects to get you ready for back to school this month! Today we are sharing our DIY pencil pouches for your kids to keep all of their writing utensils together in one place. These felt zipper pouches are functional, durable, and uniquely stylish.
Our DIY pencil pouches are simply made with felt and a zipper. We created two pencil pouch designs to choose from: a cute kitty and green three-eyed monster. We used a sewing machine to put them together, but you could also sew these by hand if you do not have a sewing machine around. If you want your pencil pouch to last for the entire school year, you will want to make sure that you are using high quality felt. For the body of the pouches we decided to use thick, 3mm felt from A Child’s Dream Come True. We chose the Moss color for the monster, and Dune for the cat. For the facial details and ears, we used a thinner 1mm felt. Once you pick out your felt colors, print the PDF template below and use each piece as a guide for cutting your felt.
After you have your felt pieces ready, you will also need to pick out some zippers from your local craft or fabric store. We used a heavy duty zipper, and made sure that the zipper for the monster was extra “toothy” 😉 Follow the photo tutorial below to guide you through the sewing process for your DIY pencil pouches. Members can also download our printable instructions. Stay tuned for our DIY monster backpacks that are sure to match perfectly with these DIY pencil pouches! Always feel free to write in with suggestions for projects or printables that you would like to see, and follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to see our daily projects. Enjoy! ~ Lia
