Summer is here! The sun is out, the days are long and it is the ideal time to host a lively gathering with friends and family. Tropical parties are a natural theme for summer get-togethers, so as a simple and charming party decor idea we came up with these DIY pineapple paper lanterns. They will only take a few minutes to put together, and you can easily save them for other parties in the future!

Getting Started
Find the template for the pineapple lanterns at the bottom of the post. We cut our pineapple paper lanterns onto glitter paper from Michaels, then found some textured green card for the stem. Both are super easy to find from your local craft store. Once you have your materials, you can start cutting the design. There is an SVG file to use with a cutting machine, which certainly makes it easier to trim out all those little papercut details in the pineapple. If you are cutting by hand, download the PDF version of the design.
Cutting by Hand
Cutting the pineapples by hand will be more time consuming, but it is certainly doable. Print the PDF onto regular copy paper and cut out the design with scissors. Trace this onto the back of a sheet of glitter paper. Then you can cut the design out of the glitter paper. You can leave it as is, or you can cut out the little details using an x-acto blade if you want to make the light shine through. This will give it the look we intended, but we know that making those cuts is more tedious!
Adding the Stem
The stem is made of two pieces that slide together in the middle. Use a hot glue gun to connect all the tabs of the pineapple and close up the cylinder. Then stick the stem on top – you will want some glue to hold it in place. After you finish this, you can add tea lights to your pineapple paper lanterns! Of course, make sure you are using flameless tea lights – fire and paper are not the best combo 😉 Set them out as a fun summer accent for your home decor, or use the lanterns as tropical party decor for your luau gatherings!

I am having trouble getting the pineapple lantern to cut correctly on my Cricut Explore Air2. The program divides the cuts into 2 mats which do not line up. The v-cut is off center from the first cut. The program has you remove the mat after the first cut, and then re-insert for the 2nd cut. Would have been much easier to have all cuts done one after the other. There is no way to by-pass the mat removal after the first cut. Suggestions?
Hi Barbara,
You must select both the yellow pineapple layer and the black line detail cuts and then attach them. This will allow them to cut in one pass through!
These were so cute! I cheated a bit and printed it out on yellow card stock, then only cut the little slits for light to show through. Perfect for decorating my table top during father’s day bbq we hosted. Thank you!
That’s a great idea!
Bonjour,
Très très jolies ces lanternes !!! J’aime beaucoup…Bravo !
I love these lanterns but have really struggled with putting the top on without having to use tons of hot glue. And even then they tend to want to fall to one side or the other. Any tips on how to make them look as nice as the examples in your pictures?
I’m sorry you’re having trouble! I push the topper down into the opening as much as I can, and actually used quite a bit of glue myself (I flipped it over and glued from the inside as well).
Adorable paper lanterns, I’m making these for our first summer pool party over the weekend. 🙂
How fun!!
I like such paper lanterns very much.
Is there a chance that you additionally offer a larger size – i.e. one lantern side on one template side? I myself prefer higher lanterns, maybe others prefer these, too. And I guess that many members don’t have a software to enlarge your templates. Your team works with a professional graphic software, it’s easier for you to enlarge the templates than for us members.
Best regards
Kerstin
Thanks Kerstin! This is the only size we have available in the pineapple lantern.
