Felt Witch Kitty
Getting Familiar
Every good witch needs a familiar, and ours comes with her own hat and cape. A stuffed black kitty dressed for Halloween might be the most seasonal thing on your craft table this season. Her arms and legs move, and her cape comes right off.

In fact, our Felt Witch Kitty is a stuffed felt black cat and an intermediate sewing project. If you're comfortable with basic hand stitching and building 3D felt shapes, assembly will come together more easily.
First, we'll cut the kitty from Lia Griffith Wool Blend Felt and fill her with Lia Griffith Stuffie Puff. A few Poly-Pellets Weighted Stuffing Beads give her a little heft, and lastly, 6mm Craft Eyes bring her face to life. Then, we'll attach her arms and legs with a long needle so they stay movable. That way, you can pose her sitting on a shelf or waving from the mantel.
Next comes her Halloween wardrobe. The witch hat and cape come together in Purple Potion, Wisteria, and Lavender felt, with a pop of Green Retreat. We also added snaps to the cape, so it's easy to take on and off. For stitching, we're using DMC embroidery floss.
Working with black felt comes with two tips we always share. First, mark your pieces with a white colored pencil or fabric pencil, since ordinary pens disappear on dark felt. Second, black felt attracts a lot of lint. Instead of a lint roller, dab it with clear tape, which lifts the fuzz without roughing up the felt's texture.
In old folklore, a witch's familiar was an animal companion, and black cats were the most famous of them all. However, not every story casts them as spooky. In parts of Britain and Japan, a black cat is considered a sign of good luck.
Set your felt black cat on a mantel or bookshelf among your Halloween decor, or pair her with our Papercut Cardstock Halloween Framed Art. After Halloween, simply take off the cape, and she becomes a cozy black cat for the rest of fall. She also makes a sweet gift for a friend who loves all things spooky.
When your felt black cat is finished, share her in our crafters' community and on social using #MadeWithLia.
FAQs
What stitches are used in the felt black cat?
This project uses four hand stitches: the blanket stitch, whip stitch, straight stitch, and ladder stitch.
Is the felt black cat a good project for beginners?
It's an intermediate project. If you're newer to felt sewing, try a simpler project like our Felt S'mores ↗ first.
How do I remove lint from black felt?
Dab it with clear tape instead of using a lint roller. As a result, the lint lifts away without damaging the felt's texture.
