Felt Blue Jay
Jay-Walking
A new craft collection means another felt friend to add to our bevy of stuffies here on the site. This month we’re featuring a common backyard visitor, known for its bright blue feathers and incredibly noisy call — the bluejay! Our Felt Blue Jay showcases beautiful embroidered detail and the bold blue plumage for which this bird is named. Don’t forget to make him a fine feathered friend or two. Check out this Felt Chickadee or Felt Quail to diversify your flock with extra color and charm.

Though the construction for this project is relatively straightforward, we still consider this an intermediate-level craft. There’s a lot of different colored felt to piece together and very detailed embroidery on the wings and tail. If you’re in the mood for a fun challenge, this is it! Additionally, there are quite a few stitches used to put this Felt Blue Jay together. Seven to be exact, so a working knowledge of embroidery is extremely helpful in bringing this little guy to life. If you are new to making felt stuffies, head over to our Felt Stuffies: 8 Easy Steps skills course to learn all the tips and tricks!
The blue jay is such a fun subject for our stuffie design due to its playful nature in real life. Smart and cunning, they’re viewed as trickster spirits and can also be quite pushy at the bird feeder. Despite their mischievous nature, they’ve also come to represent communication, loyalty, and admirable resourcefulness; traits we should all aspire to in this season of growth, renewal, and change.
Once your Felt Blue Jay is complete, be sure to send him our way! We love seeing your unique flair shine through our designs, so feel free to upload your pictures to our crafters’ forum or share it on Instagram using #MadeWithLia. Don’t forget to tag your friends too!
